After clerking, my BF recently accepted an offer from and joined a V50 firm (been there a few weeks). Shortly before his start date, he heard back from a V5 firm (one he’s wanted to join for a while) and just got an even better offer. Practice groups at each firm are also different.

The office he joined for the V50 firm is in City A. The office for the V5 firm is in City B (where V50 firm also has an office).

How should he break the news to the V50 firm to minimize reputational risk, etc.?

There’s no way to minimize reputational risk, but the whole people trying to ruin your reputation for leaving a firm is overblown.

like

If he really wants to do this, considering everything that goes along with working at a V5, I don’t think there’s anything special about the process. Schedule a meeting with the boss. Tell the boss your leaving, that you’re sorry for the abrupt departure, and that you appreciate the opportunity, and then deal with whatever blowback you get. 2 weeks is a cup of coffee. He probably will soon be forgotten by most people although a few may hold a grudge. So the hard question isn’t “how,” but rather “whether.”

I have to be honest: he’s so junior, no one will care or remember. This is a good thing. Just be polite / gracious when quitting and the reputations risk will be essentially zero. Best of luck!

Hi Fishes,
I applied for a role in Accenture. Gave the skill assessment test and also the technical interview. After the interview, the HR called within one week and asked for the details and expected CTC. I gave the required information. But after that the portal is still now showing as Interview/Interviewing. On checking with the person I got referral, I got to know that they are saying that I haven't attended my skill assessment. There might be any glitch. What should I do as of now?

For those working in house, how much “from scratch” document drafting are you doing vs. reviewing and revising “outside documents”. For example, if your company wants to enter into a joint venture company with another entity, are you drafting the company agreement “from scratch” or is it based on internal forms? Or are you getting outside counsel to do it?

I recently made a move into compliance, and I hate it. It’s so boring, and I miss working with lawyers in a legal role. We just think and interact differently, and it’s never been more apparent. I’m fairly junior so I’m thinking of making the move back to a firm and doing my time before going in-house. Any advice would be much appreciated.

How common is severance pay/benefits for in-house positions? For what time period after being laid off / percentage of base compensation? Is it normally negotiated with compensation, etc., prior to acceptance of a position? Is there a tactful/smart way to raise it in negotiations (e.g., something along the lines of “I’m taking a risk making this move in-house; it’s only fair for you to take in the risk of my involuntary departure.”)?

What is fastest way to improve both structured communication and thinking? Any helpful books or drills?
It’s the one consistent feedback I get while casing , “to be more structured” I’m there for math ability , business logic , creativity.

My spouse has spent 4 yrs in major market biglaw. She has always been interested in public policy/government work and went to law school to do that work. After 2016 election, left DC and did corporate. Now she wants to go back and has had several interviews over the past 5 months with a major DC law firm/lobbying firm. Final round interview in Dec went really well. No response for a month, no response to follow up emails. Is this just holiday delay or should she consider this opp dead?
