The average person is counseled out long before that

likefunny

I agree with Mck2’s numbers but keep in mind that a huge portion of the population self selects out before those numbers. I would say 1/3 of post MBA associates leave before EM’ing, so at that point you have 85% of the 67% remaining making it, or about 57% actually making it to EM. Past that, I’d estimate 60% of EM’s leave without taking a real swing at AP, so if we assume half that try make it, we’re now at .57 * .4 *.5 or about 11%. 1 in 9 incoming MBAs making AP sounds about right to me.

It’s when you make associate partner, so 5ish years on average

People make EM in 2 years on average and I would guess 80-90% of people who want to EM are able to. I would guess 50% of EMs who want to be an AP are able to

helpful

And lol @strategy&. Proof of why you shouldn’t believe everything you read on on fb What do EMs make on average?

like

^This is expected. The real question is how many of those who opt out actually opt out because they were counseled out.

like

M1 makes a good pt. Hard to estimate considering there’s a lot who may say they’re leaving on their own accord but actually leaving because they know they don’t have what it takes or have been kinda pushed out. I have a couple of friends who have clearly been fired because of bad performance but they keep saying I was laid off due to there being no work. Um, I’m like they didn’t give you any work because you sucked and got rolled off all your projects

like

Very hard to say. Often, leaving and being counseled out are on the same spectrum. If you’re dying and dial it back 5 hours/wk, maybe you can’t hang anymore. Did you leave (a little bit)? Or you’re told you’re behind at 12-18 months and will have to step it up to get promoted. But you’re already maxed out and decide to leave. Is that the same as counseled out? The objective metric is whether someone was in a performance box that tracks to promotion. About half of departures are those folks and half are folks who are off track. Regardless of who initiates the discussion

smart

Anecdotally, the half life for my class has been about 2-2.5 years. So about 25% of folks I started with are at Principal now. On the surface few are truly counseled out, but agree with BCG1, many of the volunteer to leave situations were also a writings on the wall situation. But there are definitely a lot of folks who were on track and truly did just leave for new opportunities. So it is tough to say, there isn’t really a clean breakdown of when/why people leave

like

^ Any estimate on percentage of associates making it to EM each year? What about EM to AP?

Those numbers are better than I thought

Could hit 400 as first year Principal, starting after 4 full years (ie in your 5th year) More likely to be high 3s that year though. Definitely more than 1/9 make it there. Probably treble that. 500 could be P3/P4 or not. Principal bonus can be 100% of base, so it depends

How many do you think could make it if they didn’t quit bcg1?

@BCG1, there is no way 1/3 of current post-MBA Cs/APCs will become principals—our current pyramid wouldn’t support that math

I feel like MBB is no different than other companies in the way that it takes the same personality traits to make you successful. I truly believe the most important differentiator is having great communication skills (verbal and written) with verbal being slightly more important, something that some people regardless of how hard they try will never become proficient at.
