After living in Dallas and Houston for a few years, Houston seems to be the runaway winner. Please enlighten me what Dallas has to offer over Houston.

Houston Pros: Better food, better music, more culture/diversity, kinder and more laid back people, not as status conscious, nice and affordable neighborhoods in the city as opposed to Dallas which is just distant suburbs around a rotting urban core, no tornadoes, NASA, Houston Rodeo, close to the beach

Houston cons: heat, humidity, hurricanes, flooding, economy that is too concentrated on oil & gas, much more aggressive drivers, imo not as physically attractive of a population as Dallas - though I suppose that depends on your type

Houstonian here and this is pretty accurate. Dallas is great, but would rather live here.

Less humidity

Idk how you can live in either one of those turds!

I guess either city is fine as long as you don’t look or go outside too often. Or have a beach/lake house with lots of toys.

Less hurricane risk, a NHL team, more flight options from the airport, maybe less traffic

Dallas is less traffic but weather is colder than Houston. I found more food/milk tea in Houston but can’t find a good Thai food in Houston yet. I just feel commute in Houston is longer than dallas… (exp from person who lived in Dallas over 10 years and houston over 2 years) 😂

The problem with Dallas is it wants to be NYC. The problem with Houston is it wants to be Dallas.

Which is what you would say if you wanted to be Dallas.

Houston traffic and humidity 🤮

Dallas traffic is just as bad.

Although Dallas humidity is not as bad, at the end of the day hot is hot. I think the numerous Houston pros outweigh this one thing Dallas over Houston.

Isn’t Houston basically HUMIDITY CENTRAL?? The only thing I miss about TX is the absence of State income tax.

Movers are coming tomorrow and I have procrastinated packing the miscellaneous drawers and whatnot. My lack of organization becomes very apparent when I pull out 10 different categories of things from one drawer. Chuck 25% and the rest gets put in a box to the new place. Anyone else feel that packing for a move is harder than it should be?

Do you record your unbillable time? I have had conflicting responses. I have been told it's not good for efficiency calculations but others have told me if your still doing work let people know. For example, I get weird international stuff sometimes that not everyone gets (I think maybe? ) and I need to reread the 5471 rules or 8865 rules as I do the returns. I have been told not to bill for this but if I didn't have to spend time to do such things my billable hours would be higher

Hi tax 🐠,

I have a question for those who prep individual tax returns. My parents claim my grandfather as a dependent on their tax return and due to their low income, receive PTC for the premiums they pay on his insurance (not eligible for medicare). However, would it be advantageous to have him file for his own tax return (he stays with my parents and doesn't have his own proof of residency via bills). If so, can he get PTC if his income is 0?

Partners or whomever can help me understand about billing and hours. To keep things simple, let’s say you only have one staff to work 1,700 billable hours a year on a $60k salary and you have only one job that and the rate charged to the client is $300/hour and an projected hours budget of 1,700 hours. So ideally you would have revenue of $510k. If the staff takes less time partners make less money and if they take more time partners make more money while the staff keeps the same salary?

I started at a new firm this year in January. I had a billable goal that was given to me mid year of around 1750 house for the year. I am nowhere near that and definitely will not meet the goal. I had so many non billable hours I was forced to take when I first came in. I worked my ass off in busy season. At my previous firm I never fell short of hours as it was B4. This firm is mid sized and more focused on WLB. My question is how bad do you think this will affect my comp??
