^exactly. I took to slathering each piece of protein with butter to meet my macros. I wasn't as successful as I was hoping, but then I also didn't quit drinking. Buy the ketone test strips to monitor, that helped me a lot. Someone on this app recommended them to me!
I have starting eating healthy and cutting carbs (eggs in morning, deli meat without bread, hot dog no bun, etc.) but figure eating special K cereal and fruit like apple slices / bananas is easy for me. Is that a bad idea to eat sugary fruit or does that diet sound ok - sort of a modified less stringent low carb?
Depends on the person some people get kicked out of ketosis much easier than others.

^this podcast is a great intro
OP make sure breakfast and lunch includes a lot of fats. When I started, I had butter, cheese and olive oil with every meal. As much as you may be tempted to just eat salad at lunch, don't do it. You will be deprived of nutrients and will crash. The trick is to stay full to avoid cravings. And oh! Stay off the fruit
I had a REALLY tough time with maintaining the macros. The fat:protein ratio was the hardest tomaintain to make sure you do your research. I got the MyFitnessPal upgraded version so I'll usually enter what I plan to eat in the app first and make sure it stays within my macros before I eat it.
K1 I'm also concerned about the fat to protein ratio. I've read that the body can use protein as carbs to manufacture glucose so that's why its lower. Has anyone had negative effects on muscle mass or gym performance on Keto?
You are not going to lose muscle mass unless you go into starvation mode. At 60-70% fat in your diet, your body can sustain or build lean muscle depending on how strenuous your workout is. The problem with too much protein during keto is that the body will break protein into glucose easier than it can use fat assuming no carbs. And glucose in the bloodstream kicks you out of keto. Just about 0.7-0.8 grams per lb is ideal for someone doing moderate workouts on keto
That's reassuring, thanks guys. I'm also starting the 5x5 StrongLifts program and I'm making big gains right now since I'm new to it. Just wanted to make sure I wouldn't feel like a weakling on this plan :)
The first week in Ketosis you'll struggle with your energy a bit but it will be back with a vengeance in week 2-3. Keto on!
How have y'all maintained this on the road?
