After reading through a few posts here, I’m thinking to see a therapist, can someone help me/guide me on how to find one ?

Congratulations on your self-care decision, OP!

Option 1
1. Think about what you are looking for. Do you have a gender preference? Sexuality (done will identify openly as LGBT+)? Do you want older or younger? Is there a topic or technique you might want them to specialize in? Do you need remote plus in person options?

2. Check insurance coverage

3. Research in your area (if wanting in person). I used psychologytoday.com to browse and filter profiles.

4. Call office and ask if they’re accepting new patients, check insurance, and schedule at least two sessions.

5. Go. Ask questions about how they work and get a feel for their style. Try it twice before switching to someone new. It takes a little time to build rapport and to get over first session awkwardness.

Option 2
1. Figure out some of what you want help on or your preferences (as in 1 above)
2. Call your employers EAP (employee assistance program or similar name) for a referral

Option 3
Ask your primary care doctor for a recommendation

Option 4
Ask friends or family for recommendation

Different schools out there. Do you want to look back at your life in an introspective way ("why") or do you want to be handled tools to manage whatever issue you're going on ("how") ? If 1, I would suggest psychanalitic approach (kind of a long term commitment though). If 2, then look for cognitive behavorial therapy. CBT are numerous and you may try a few therapists before finding the right one for you and that's okay.

Has anyone dealt with parents that never listens to what you actually need? All I need is support and empathy, but they always hand me oranges when I ask (specifically for apples).
