After the report came out about sexual assaults in Ubers, are you guys afraid of using ride shares alone?

No. I've never had an issue and I've never felt close to having an issue.

I recognize that this is also because I am very adept at being polite while having a barrier that makes people keep their distance from me. I don't love having this trait because it makes dating very hard, but I appreciate its advantages.

I’ll have to agree with EY 1 - of course each situation is different and the victim is NEVER at fault. However a person that looks off guard and another one that looks very aware of surroundings can have an impact, as unconsciously you get the feeling the person with guards up can for example have a weapon to defend themselves. It falls within those lines of non-verbal communication.

like

Been using Uber for years, on a weekly basis, in 8+ countries, 20+ cities.
Never a single issue.
I guess I am just not that appealing...

Rape isn’t about the victim being sexually appealing to the rapist; it’s about power and control and the rapist wanting to rape.

I’m as afraid as before the report.

As afraid as before ride share apps and I could only use a cab.

As afraid as before I could afford cabs and had to use the subway or the bus at night.

This isn’t anything new.

It’s just more of the same.

like

And with Rideshare apps you can share your location as well as your drivers information with pretty much everybody in your contact list.

like

Aren’t the sexual assaults as a percentage of total trips tiny? Like under .0003%?

You’re far more likely to be assaulted by someone you know than by your Uber driver.

Growing up in a large city, I’ve always worried about this type of stuff, no matter if it was the subway, bus, taxi, etc. on my Lyft, I use a male name on my account. It makes drivers assume my boyfriend/husband order me the car and leave me alone :)

like

I I am always afraid something like this would happen. I always share my ride no matter what time of the day. I also never take Uber solo when drunk.

like

Sharing the ride / progress, including live location, allows someone to see A. If your ride deviates from planned or typical route; and/or B. If your ride stops somewhere other than your destination and/or C. If your ride is taking much longer than the estimated ETA.

like

I always hated the idea of getting into a strangers car, so yes I avoid Uber at all costs.

like

I’m not afraid but I always share my location / ride status with my husband or someone I’m traveling with and typically will talk to someone on the phone. I also use the comfort + option (or Lyft equivalent) which may be psychological, but I feel like it is a bit safer

like

No. Statistically I’m as likely getting assaulted walking down the street. I don’t stop walking down the street

like

I’d already heard plenty about sexual assaults in Ubers (and taxis, buses, etc.) before the report came out. Seeing it in print won’t change my usage. I am always on alert every time I got into a ride share or taxi or any mode of transit by myself.

I’m dating someone new and it is going very well. He is kind, not high strung, with great values and shares my sense of humor. It is so easy and natural to spend multiple days with him.
Still I am having doubts because I think he isn’t very “intellectual”. To be clear, he’s intelligent! He is a great STEM role that requires an advanced degree. We share a love of reading as well. However he is not really interested in world affairs, does not follow the news closely, does not have a strong grasp

Been passed over for promotion twice (had support from multiple partners both times). Received the top performance rating every year since joining the firm (6 years), which I’ve heard is rare. When passed over, the partners say there were others who have been waiting longer (not necessarily with the highest ratings) and that I should “keep doing what I’m doing” and basically wait my turn. Anyone else face this and have any suggestions/guidance?

I recently presented to some potential new hires on a video call. DURING the call, one of the potential hires sent me a DM on LinkedIn saying "Hey ;) Maybe we can collaborate" What the hell do I do? It feels so unprofessional. This guy has already been offered a job, we were just trying to convince them to accept. But I am uncomfortable.

My friend who I have known for 10 years recently became really weird about paying me back for things and I’m not sure how to handle it. We went to a group dinner and everyone paid me back but her, I assumed she forgot and let it go. We went out to grab a drink yesterday, I had one glass of wine, she had 3 cocktails and then ordered a meal, when the bartender asked how we wanted to split the check she quickly said “you can just split it evenly”. I ended up paying $55 for my glass of wine (cont)

Do you think it’s fair to pay full price for a missed appointment? Long story short, I lost track of time by 30 minutes. By the time I realized I messaged her and she said she can’t extend the time due to other clients so I suggested we reschedule for next week. She’s now asking for full payment of $175. I tried to renegotiate so she brought it down to $115. Does this seem fair? Looking for other perspectives

Well I did a very bad thing... we found out this week my husband’s father has an aggressive terminal cancer. My father in law doesn’t want to tell anyone and I am supposed to not say anything. The only reason I know is because we live with him. When I was speaking to my mom on the phone I burst out crying and had to tell her, and I had another burst out crying event where I told a friend. I told my husband this and he is rightfully furious with me. :( not sure what I can do to make it right...

My husband yells at me in front of my 2 years old, even when he is scared. He needs to express his anger out before he can shut down. I am planning to leave him but I am hesitant because I am afraid this would negatively impact my son more, not having a father figure around much.... not the first time, my husband promises multiple time that at least he would control his anger in front of kid but never Lee up the promise...sometimes he would even throw stuff (not at me and my child)...
