After working as a bookkeeper/office manager in manufacturing and service for years, after a plant I worked for closed operations 3 years ago, I accepted a position in public accounting. I hate it. But it seems many businesses are closing or outsourcing their accounting. What can a person near the end of their career years do with an accounting and admin background that is not in an accounting firm. I liked the variety I once had.

Join the outsourcing providers?
Part-time controller, ArtsPool, etc - their clients tend to be nonprofits who can’t afford full time accounting staff, so they outsource their bookkeeping and accounting work.

Why not go back to office management? Unless I'm misunderstanding your post, seems you enjoyed that and only left because the company you worked for closed the plant.

It seems that many companies are relocating or closing, or outsourcing their accounting and admin work. Finding work is a challenge. I went from a larger accounting firm to a smaller local one, but it's no better. It's write ups of bank and credit card statements, and numerous payroll tax returns. Getting as much done in little time and boring work. And having to log in the time on each client.

I’m one year out of law school, and a challenge of in house for me so far has been the lack of sustained and focused training in certain areas, though I know there’s no substitute for hands-on work.
