After you make partner you have to pay your own insurance. Partners with spouses that do not have company provided insurance (mine is a 1099 employee, for example): how much are you paying per month for family health insurance? Any tips here?

Roughly $33k per year out of pocket to cover two adults and one child. My one tip is to support the adoption of a single-payer healthcare system.

Actually a pretty good hmo with modest deductibles, but it’s still a tough pill.

like

Is this universally true? At my firm our insurance goes up every year for everyone because we have a lot of older partners with health conditions

like

Not universally true. Equity partner in v50 here. Insurance still mostly subsidized. I agree that it isn’t always the gold mine it seems like from the outside. Also is true that at a lot of firms, partners have to get their own insurance.

like

This isn’t the point of this thread, but would you mind sharing what other expenses you now have as a partner that you didn’t as an associate? Did you have to make a sizable contribution to the partnership when you joined?

like

You could look into Obamacare as an alternative. (I’m serious.)

like

Mine is subsidized and I still pay $26k as it is based on my salary.

Quite miffed as I just got a small pay rise and now I think this plus the upcoming not rises in utilities and inflation will pretty much cancel it out.

Can someone point me to some material where I can read about profit sharing vs 401k. I get the concept, but I am trying to understand is 10% profit sharing vested over 5 years better than an employee 401k match of 6%?

From my understanding 10% PS is better because it’s just a standard 10% on top of whatever I contribute though it takes 5 years to vest. Does this mean if I leave before 5 years I don’t get any of it?

This job is a lot better if you don't care about the bonus and hours requirement. I can pretty easily bill 1700 hours annually and my firm so far hasn't cared in the slightest. Worrying about hitting 2000 hours for the bonus used stress me out so much, and I just don't think it's worth it. Base salaries are ridiculous and way more than enough to finance my lifestyle.

I am a mid level and have received an offer from a regional big law firm in a non-market paying location. I believe the firm would be a great fit and the location is where I want to be. The biggest issue is money. I’d be lateraling from full cravath in a major market and the initial offer I received is a bit off that (read: 50% salary reduction). While the market is cheaper in some respects, housing is not. How far can I expect this firm to go to in terms of compensation? Any negotiation tips?
