Serious answer, whether you are behind or not depends on your retirement goals. No one knows what your goals are. For example, for me, my goal is to be financially independent by age 45. So as long as Im making steady progress towards that, I am not behind.

like

I agree with this. I’ll add to that your retirement goal needs to be linked with how much money you need per year during retirement and how much you plan to leave behind (inheritance).

You’re always behind somebody. BUT you’re ahead of many many in the globe, who probably can derive a million times more happiness with a lot less. So count your blessings and try to see how you can help those who are behind . That is personally my source of “wealth “.

How everyone in the US is so obsessed with that 🙈🙈🙈🙈

No, D2 is spot on. Being poor in America leads to education and health outcomes akin to third world countries. That's objectively true. I only shared my experiences to highlight the difference in scale. I've talked to people in the US who don't understand how they can get out. It doesn't matter how smart, talented, or hardworking you are. If you aren't aware of what's out there, you can't imagine a way of getting there. This may sound extreme to many Americans, but America is a huge place, and there are places like this. The difference between America and other countries is that in America, you only need the right spark to focus your efforts not get out of a bad situation. Other countries don't have that. The tragedy is that other first world countries with fewer resources than the US have all but eliminated this type of poverty. You still have stark difference between the health and wellbeing between the richest and the poorest, but the poorest have better access to basic welfare.

Did you start contributing/maxing your 401k later in life? I would look into maxing out hsa for a triple tax benefit and a mega backdoor Roth IRA (you can Google the steps on this)

Also just received unsolicited offer to be in house at young small company that will start at 200k and offer equity totaling payouts of low 7 figures over next five years but requires me to be away four nights/wk 2 hrs from home. May be able to work remote 2 days eventually. Life span of company is 5ish years. Married w/ 3 kids under 5

I am trying to buy a plot of land and was just advised that taking out a land loan for $25k is not the best decision and I might want to consider a HELOC or borrowing from my 401k. Both HELOC and 401k I have always been told are bad decisions. After thinking about it, I definitely want to go in with an all cash offer, just need to find the $25k. Any advice?

I was a bit hyper obsessed about saving that extra 2-3k a year and saying no to that extra beach trip or mountain weekend or even a round of golf. Now I think I should be saying yes, what do you guys think? Just curious for thisconv

Hi everyone, this is a question on Health Spending Account. And to make it more annoying, this money does not roll over to the next year. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Feeling blah. Got an offer and turned it down (I wouldn’t have taken), and told this other company that I got an offer, which resulted in the recruiter speeding up my 2nd interview. After the interview, they said that they’d need another interview and to speak to my refs before going forward, and that if I have an offer, they don’t want me to hold me back from taking it. Mind’s kind of in a jumble after this long process. Thoughts from my fellow fish?

Hi Google - I am requesting guidance! I am prepping for my interview specifically GCA and open ended questions. I struggle to tell if the outcome should be talking through your process/steps (maybe for a question like - how would you go about determining program complexity) vs a specific solution such as create x new product, for x market by x date based on my assumptions. Is the desired outcome something I can clarify with the interviewer?
