In the normal, rational world: you’re doing great and will have a good life.
In this bowl: eww, you’re one of those poors.

I've had some life setbacks. I'm 36 and my total net worth is <$100k. But I've built that in the last couple years and I'm not worried about retirement.
How everyone in the US is so obsessed with that 🙈🙈🙈🙈

No, D2 is spot on. Being poor in America leads to education and health outcomes akin to third world countries. That's objectively true. I only shared my experiences to highlight the difference in scale.
I've talked to people in the US who don't understand how they can get out. It doesn't matter how smart, talented, or hardworking you are. If you aren't aware of what's out there, you can't imagine a way of getting there. This may sound extreme to many Americans, but America is a huge place, and there are places like this.
The difference between America and other countries is that in America, you only need the right spark to focus your efforts not get out of a bad situation. Other countries don't have that. The tragedy is that other first world countries with fewer resources than the US have all but eliminated this type of poverty. You still have stark difference between the health and wellbeing between the richest and the poorest, but the poorest have better access to basic welfare.
I think you’re really far behind. Those are rookie numbers. I am 22 with a net worth of 500,000. Sorry to ruin your Sunday OP
Definitely behind. I’m 13 with 750k net worth.
At Deloitte we don’t subscribe to the “behind” mindset

Faaaar behind, jeez, I had three houses by the time I was 20
Serious answer, whether you are behind or not depends on your retirement goals. No one knows what your goals are.
For example, for me, my goal is to be financially independent by age 45. So as long as Im making steady progress towards that, I am not behind.
I agree with this. I’ll add to that your retirement goal needs to be linked with how much money you need per year during retirement and how much you plan to leave behind (inheritance).

You’re always behind somebody. BUT you’re ahead of many many in the globe, who probably can derive a million times more happiness with a lot less.
So count your blessings and try to see how you can help those who are behind . That is personally my source of “wealth “.

far ahead of the average American
Behind relative to many of the people posting their “stats”
Did you start contributing/maxing your 401k later in life? I would look into maxing out hsa for a triple tax benefit and a mega backdoor Roth IRA (you can Google the steps on this)
You’re the best of the lousiest, and the lousiest of the best.
Retirement seems a bit behind but otherwise you are way way ahead of most Americans.
Recently, I heard a comment when people discuss compensation, savings, etc. - “digital wealth”. And it really opened up my mind. Yes it is important. But no more than your health, family, having joy in life, fulfilling employment.
Severely behind ...
OP, if you have to ask...
