Who thinks it's easy? Clients who boost an occasional organic post about some internal event nobody gives a shit about and call it "in house paid social"
“Me push boost - go viral” (caveman client voice)
“Media peeps”, unless they are social strategists, aren’t any better-qualified to answer this question than anyone else in the company. They just think they are and often pretend to be when it benefits them to do so in front of clients.
But, yes, it’s “pretty hard” and it’s more strategically than technically-intensive.
It’s hard, it’s fascinating, it’s satisfying, and no one around here gets it - or appreciates it
It's not grossly inaccessible, but it's hard.
I am continually amazed by how many people at big brands and decent size agencies think paid social is clicking "Boost Post" button.
Let’s be honest, social media won’t ever really be respected. Additionally, learning a platform is different than learning a skill. You may know Facebook well but that doesn’t mean your skills are transferable to a different social media platform.
Creatives and data people have hard skills that are platform-agnostic. Trying to compare yourselves to those people isn’t a fair comparison
No it’s pretty simple
Who thinks it's easy? There's hundreds of different types of ads to build to spec. Not even people at Facebook can tell you this level of encyclopedic information.

It makes continuous optimization’s across all channels. If you think about it, the back and forth between agency and client about small campaign optimizations will literally be gone overnight. These platforms are going to start doing all the heavy lifting.
Does it matter? What’s the ROI?
While I won’t say it’s easy, it really isn’t rocket science. I just had a vendor show off an AI media buying platform that will basically make planners and managers obsolete.
Which vendor?
Strategy director - if you run certain types of ads that accompany pixel data you can clearly see ROI data so, you might not be asking the right question - “does it matter?"
I’ve seen that too and it was great but it’s out of reach for companies that don’t have incredibly large advertising budgets like the government, associations, etc.
Ehh, minimum budget is 60k, but it’s across clients. If Ogilvy wanted to, they could not hire 1 planner and pay for this and have a Social Strategist run the platform.
Good point! They could then I could lay myself off 😂
OP - maybe you missed my point.
If it doesn’t really matter then maybe it’s not that people think it’s easy, it’s that, given the balance of our limited resources, it’s not worth the effort.
I’m long Facebook, by the way.
But I don’t know or feel like i need to know these little details
Why does everyone shit on media people?
