Ah the great Ad Agency Bubble, your agency is doing great, growing exponentially then boom, clients are lost, there are layoffs and there are no raises/promotions for a year. What do you do jump ship?

What good ship is even worth jumping to? The only areas still worthy are the land of Google, Facebook and the likes.

If you’re current, have digital skills, and embrace change instead of feeling threatened by it then there are a million opportunities to transfer your agency skills to publishers or client side. It actually feels like an exciting time to be looking for work!

Agreed. With clients scrutinizing spending and starting their own internal ad agencies, will our shops still stand the test of time?

We are at the best time where the means of production are at our fingertips literally, advertising can be more localized with agility and new thinking in the digital social without accounts raising red flags, or being the devil's advocate. Hire freelancers on a project basis. Money and capital are v important, that's why the hustle is so thrilling.

I just jumped and followed my favorite client. She put words in and now I work for her new company at a new agency.

Strategist 1, I’m seeing a lot of that now. People are jumping ship and joining their clients which I think is a smart move.

Have you worked at Facebook? It’s not fun

Half my team got laid off and while I’m grateful to have my job still, I feel like I’m drowning in the additional work. All of their responsibilities have been assigned to me, the most junior person on the team. At a new firm and right away I knew I wasn’t going to get along with one partner. Had a conflict with one of his associates early on. Everyone else is cool. Got into it with the partner and he told me he didn’t need my help on his matters anymore. The cool associates are still asking if I can pitch in cause they’re swamped. I’m a nice guy (despite what the partner and uncool associate may say), so I’m helping out. I’m the guy that gets fired and shows up the next day. Results TBD.

If you were laid off or fired would you apply for your current job? I was laid off from Big 4 audit in 2016 after working there for 2 years and it was one of the best things to happen to me. 1. It allowed me to reflect and decide what was important in my next career. 2. Losing a job isn’t as frightening as it seems. 3. Accountants have major job security as I got a job offer within 2 weeks. When you’re miserable at work ask yourself would you apply for your current job?

Curious for thoughts on why a firm who laid off associates last year—many of whom “just happened” to be parents—is celebrated by Diversity Lab and other organizations for its diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts? Or, in any event, why does anyone in the Big Law industry put up with such blatant levels of hypocrisy?
