Ahmaud Arbery was murdered in *February*. It wasn’t until the video of the murder came out in MAY that his killers were charged and arrested. This is a reminder for me of how little Black life is valued and frankly, how high the burden of proof is for Black people to be believed in when we are on the receiving end of mistreatment, including at work. Ask yourself, how are you advocating fo your Black colleagues in the workplace?

What happened makes my blood boil. But in terms of personal action? I am personally not doing anything 🤷🏽‍♂️. I have my own issues, problems, and ambitions to focus on. But if someone were to advocate for my black colleagues in the workplace, I’d throw my support behind them. It’s really just a matter of convenience and how much time I have available and what I want to focus my life on.

OP is right. This exchange started with OP agreeing with D2. I think it was reasonable for OP to state that if your blood boils usually one is upset enough to push for change because where is that boiling blood going to go? To say your blood boils then say you aren’t upset enough to do anything about it comes off as fake.

I call out microagressions when I see them. And also macro aggressions of course, but most people don’t realize how pervasive these microaggressions are until they are constantly called out. And black people calling them out isn’t enough (sadly).

Or when I walk my dog, neighbors tell me how cute she is. When my dog barks at them walking by the front of my house, they’ll tell me “oh you have a good guard dog.”

When my SO walks the dog (he’s mixed race) people tell him that the dog is aggressive and that our dog is a “pit bull.” It is the same dog. We joke that it’s Jekyll and Hyde but know that it’s 100% about the person walking the dog and not the dog.

So glad those assholes were dumb enough to film it. It’s all because of cops protecting cops.

like

It’s so heartbreaking. Imagine if there was no video? Those racists would be chilling at home knowing they had the right connections to claim “self defense”. In terms of workplace, it’s always annoying when corporate talks about diversity efforts. Diversity is the easy part. The hard part? Inclusion! Very few (if any) are able to accomplish this

Thank you - I’m curious to see the responses to your call to action. I’m a Black American and am more than sick of this shit.

D3 In the context of this situation black on black crime and white on white crime is irrelevant. When bad stuff happens to white people by black people you NEVER hear “well let’s also focus on all the white on white crime too”. Come on...

like

Big 4 is very white so that’s important to note. I’ve worked in different offices and some are far more diverse than others. The further north you go the more white they get.

like

Absolutely, I think my point was that it’s easy for people in big 4 to not think about because they’re surrounded by white people with white issues. But I think all white people should be vocal in speaking out against the violence against POC because the silent majority of whites are a big reason that violence against POC persists. White people have the luxury of ignoring the problem and to me that is unethical to ignore such a pervasive issue because it “doesn’t affect you.” Inaction kills too.

Call out racism anywhere, anytime, and against anyone. I’ve stopped trying to explain racism and have resorted to telling people to not be assholes. People are way more likely to check themselves immediately than try and explain why their comment or action wasn’t actually racist. I don’t need to hear your excuses, I just need you to stop.

like

That’s a really good point. I feel like more people are concerned with being called racist than actually wondering if they are. This approach is smart, although it worries me that people won’t know the reasons for why they might be saying or doing the things that offend black and brown people specifically.

like

I'm mixed and advocate for my fellow Black and Brown colleagues at work. I work at a racial justice organization so it's been disappointing to see the same microaggressions POC experience at other companies exist within my workplace. The Caucasian staff cry when they are called out so they become the victims and escape accountability. 🙄

Yes, it unfortunately is. It honestly makes me lose hope for the better world I'm supposedly fighting for everyday. Thanks for starting the dialogue OP.

There's more to this story coming. Apparently there's a video of him running away from a construction site minutes before. I still think those citizens should get the charged but I'm thinking this wasn't a black/white thing.

Oh give me a breakkk.

Does anyone know Ahmauds side of the story at all? All I’ve seen is the video, which is damning.

There shouldn’t even have to be more to the story. There’s no right for 3 people to shoot and kill a person cold blooded in broad daylight. Period.
