AITA? my manager came in today coughing up a lung and she sits at the desk right next to me. She says she doesn't think she has COVID but doesn't want to test because if it is positive then she has to quarantine. I asked her to wear a mask if she's in the office with me and she said no. I went to the director and basically said that either she goes home or I go home.

Pretty sure the CDC changed their recommendation and removed the quarantine requirement. In any case, it's rude to come in when you're sick and risk infecting everyone around you, regardless of whether it's covid or the flu or whatever. If she's not being cooperative with you and upper management isn't willing to get involved, I'd see if you could work remotely until your manager's symptoms are gone.

like

That requirement lifted the mandate that if you have been EXPOSED to someone with COVID you don't have to quarantine anymore or test. This is the whole thing wrong with the CDC. They don't even know how to publish clear guidelines anymore

I'm more in shock that the company doesn't have a WFH policy for if you're sick but can work. I really though this was standard post covid, covid or not no one want you to be in the office if you're sick.

HR 2: I get the point you're trying to make but it's a bit extreme...grocery stores can allow their staffers to work in an area where you are not consistently in the same area with people. A cubicle you are consistently sitting in that same spot for over 8 hours. No you can't shut down a grocery store but in our OPs case, the job allows working from home

*Follow up: My manager refused to go home because she didn't want to use her PTO. My director let me leave for the day and work remotely

Tough call. I would hope a manager would respect the positions their people have on this issue. I don’t think you are wrong in voicing your concern. Glad to see the director allowed you to work from home. Seems like a good compromise all around for everyone’s opinion on the matter.

like

This ⬆️. Outright refusing to get tested means she was sick enough to worry it would be positive. But nice try HR2 to see the positive.

One thing we have all learned from the covid pandemic is most people don't care about keeping other people healthy/national health and two, that all you can do is control your own self and your own reactions. If you can work from home, do that. Your manager is a selfish person.

like

So true. It’s brought to the forefront how people don’t consider others.

Totally agree with your move. How immature and insensitive can people be....Let us know what the director says.

First: NTA. Second: If your company does not have a specific Covid policy regarding symptoms/testing/back to work then it is hard for anyone to enforce anything. I'm glad they made a concession for you. It sounds like your manager's physical health is not the only unhealthy thing in her life.

This subject irritates me so much! People in general seem to think that Covid is no longer an issue, when it clearly is! If you don't care about yourself enough to avoid situations that will expose you, at least take precautions to protect others; You never know who those people will be around and could possibly pass the virus to. :( Stay safe original poster!

THIS is precisely what is wrong with this whole CVID situation. SICK PEOPLE who go into work and out into society should be the real villains in this scenario and NOT the unvx'd. I am not against v'cd. What I am against is ignorant, selfish SICK people who obviously don't care about others health (what happened to killing grannie}? Those are the real idiots. I thought HR policies to not have unvxed people go into the office because of liability were to protect the company? And, they STILL let her be sick in office? This makes me so so sooooo angry.

It seems that my manager was given the option to work from home but only after I provided my ultimatum. In the end, she said she would be more productive in the office anyway. I guess we will see how she sounds tomorrow...

Have a somewhat confusing question hoping to get some insight. I had to cancel a Southwest flight last year due to covid. They issued a credit but informed me I had to book a flight that was before 9/22/21 or the credit would be lost. Here’s my question: if I book the flight so it is before the 22nd and use the credit to pay for it, if I decide to change flight dates to after 9/22 would that transfer over? Or would I have to forfeit the credit and pay for the flight. Hope this makes sense!
