I have one kid off to college in August and another one back in HS in September. Both schools are taking all the precautions they can and we’ll hope for the best. Better to give it a shot and remove some high risk activities (neither school will have fall sports) than sitting on their beds in zoom school.

I agree 100%. Zoom schools are a joke.

A significant number of families are dual income and rely on their kids going to school so they can go to work. An even greater number of single family households are counting on it as well. If the kids stay home, the parents can’t work, and if the parents can’t work, they can’t pay their bills.

@ Managing Director 1: Right? You'd think it's pretty self-explanatory, but so many people are unable to follow this logic and think parents want to send their kids to school so that they would get infected and KILL EVERYONE...

i don’t think a sample size of 5 pediatricians tells us much of anything

i don’t have kids and aren’t well enough informed to comment either way - but regardless you need more than five opinions

I think it’s becoming pretty clear that reopening schools with hygiene measures enforced is a relatively safe and impactful way of reopening

I am absolutely sending my teenagers back to school if the school re-opens (if their school does not re-open, I'll be fighting tooth and nail to get them to re-open). I am not wasting their key formative years of adolescence on "remote learning".

Good thing all the kids in those schools aren’t taught by adults and that any adults they do encounter will be well-paid, well-insured, and guaranteed protection if they fall ill during the school year or bring illness home to their familiesssssss o wait

Chicago’s is powerful I’m glad I live here, they are shutting it down. I’m sorry for areas without powerful unions. The data we get from this social experiment we are forced into will be telling.

Uh, “no hesitation” is a bit of a stretch “While some said they don't favor opening schools so soon, all 5 agreed that the benefits of in-person schooling outweigh the risks — but the key is to reopen safely.”

like

Why would they hesitate? It wasn't a pop quiz or a trivia question they are experts who had already completed their analysis of the pros and cons.

like

I keep hearing the argument that most kids won’t get too sick but the truth is some kids will. How many kids need to die for schools to close? Why is that even a question. This country is terrible to its citizens.

People just need to start wearing masks and stop hanging out so much. Such a simple thing America seems incapable of doing.

Regardless of what the doctors or the scared consultants on here say, I know all of my nieces and nephews can't wait to go back to class. They realized months ago the online classes weren't as good as in person instruction. They're all willing to take the chance and go back to high school next month.

likeuplifting

Mom is a teacher and they polled parents recently and 80% of respondents want their kids back in the classroom this fall. Would be interesting to poll teachers as well since they are the ones really at risk here. I’m still iffy about this

like

The unions are doing frequent polls but not publicly releasing the results in my state. Allegedly state should decide in the next couple weeks but I don't see how they can reasonably apply social distancing, even under an a/b schedule, when class sizes are forced to shrink by 2/3 and they were already using all available classrooms.

AA1, your logic was terrible, did you pass the bar?

What about the health of the teachers? Great that kids don’t gets so sick but the spread viruses like a sprinkler system! Tons of at risk folks open to infection here. A school year can be made up. A life cannot.

likehelpful

If half the kids get sick and it has a .001 mortality rate that’s 25k kids.

I don’t know the right answer. Best case we have a vaccine that’s safe and fully distributed by early 2022? Worst case never? If it was just the fall and then everything was back to normal I’d say hold them out, but given that nothing will change in the next 18 or so months at best, I think there would be more collective damage by holding out school that long. Let at risk teachers and students continue distanced learning.

If I had to walk a mile to and from school up hill both ways in 4ft of snow then these kids can go school with a little bug floating around

The better survey would be infectious diseases specialists and pediatric infectious disease specialists. I've found the opinions of non-ID doctors to be fairly useless for pandemic planning. They're just not trained to think exponentially.

like

I'm pointing out that pediatrics isn't the right kind of expertise in this situation. the poll is marginally better than if 5 educated parents were polled on whether they'd send their kids back to school. if you want a proper medical view, consult ID specialists. if you want a view on the psychological and educational impacts, consult child psychologists and education experts.

Nope ask the ER doctors.

That’s an ignorant, way over-simplified take. How many providers have you talked to? I work with them daily and most feel hopeful. They now have protocols in place on how to treat positive patients. They know what to look for in their labs and how they present which is a far cry from March. The death rate has dropped dramatically and we’ve gone from an average hospital stay of 2 weeks to 3-4 days.

No. We’ve made the choice as a broader family to pull all the kids out if their schools don’t have adequate online options.
