This just isn’t true. Usually they leave consulting for the same reason you do… Source: I worked for an ex-partner and interviewed with many others when I worked in corporate strategy
I agree in general but won't a lot of the people leading Corp Strategy be former Consultants/I-Bankers? It was the case in every company I have worked for, I don't think there is escaping people of that background in Corp Finance.
Can you elaborate on how it's not any different? On the client side wouldn't the hours be better, and wouldn't you have more control of the timeline?
Not OP, but in the company I used to work for, the Corp Development VP came straight from I-Banking and he made his team work insane hours, they did not have the typical industry working hours. I guess it's really dependent on how crazy the person running the place is, just like in any job.

I get nervous about those too, especially if they’re a career consultant. Can’t do anything any other way.

It’s hard to avoid former consultants and bankers. But it’s possible to avoid former consultants / bankers who don’t swear by the old methods. Companies that have their own well-defined, less hustle-prone culture can be a good start.
