All my deals went pencils down except for 3, 1 of which is targeting closing next year. I hit my yearly target already…feeling like I should just continue to say no to new work and fly under the radar for a quiet few weeks before my other 2 deals try to close year end. Thoughts?

I’ve tried this but it was hard saying no to work (even though I’ve hit target) when I was billing 20ish hrs per week and other folks were on 60/70 :(

Update: I got more work. Now wishing that I didn’t have a conscience and continued to indicate “no capacity” 🤣

How many new deals are just now coming in for the end of the year? Hopefully (fingers crossed), most of the deals are spoken for and you shouldn’t get staffed on too many new things.

Writing sample question:

I’m applying for an associate position at a big law firm. I graduated law school last year but immediately went in-house at a large corporation and I’m now looking to make a move to a firm setting.

In my role at the corporation, I haven’t gotten to draft anything substantial. I’ve put together a couple of memos but only one reaches 10 pages and it’s not particularly interesting. Is it bad if I use a more impressive writing sample from my 2L summer?

Strategy Q: We have a strategic strong hold in a specific region that is quite demanding, unappreciative and difficult as a customer. Their requests often take the product on a tangent as they have very niche use cases, and this uses up (some) Engg bandwidth from other key areas needed to grow the market both locally and in other locals.
Leadership wants to keep the client so they agree to all their demands.
How common is this? Is this strategy okay or are there pitfalls we aren't seeing?

Has a doctor ever suggested that you consider a less stressful job? And if so, are you male or female? I am female and have some chronic conditions. Today at a routine check-up with a new physician, he suggested maybe because of my "medical conditions" I think about a less stressful job. I have never received that advice from the specialists I see for those conditions, and I find it unlikely that a doctor would suggest this to a male patient. Does anyone have any insight?

Decision: big city atty for ntwide ins defense firm for 4 years. gotten great lit experience, over 100 depos, handle own cases. Some big, but lot of run of mill PI. Make above market for work, great rep with partners and autonomy with hrs. Compare to offer for the most reputable firm in city (not ntwide tho), complex lit, not as much depos but more motion work, private pay clients, and tons more comraderie. Pay is same, bttr bnft. Seems right but worried I’d be leaving a stable, established job

Anyone have insight for WilmerHale?

Specifically, I'm interested in knowing:
1. The culture across the firm
2. Whether associates are (or can be) hired in offices that don't have a presence for their intended group (e.g., if I could work out of LA for the IP group, which currently does not have any attorneys in the LA office)
3. What the culture is like in the LA, SF, Palo Alto offices
4. Culture in the IP group, specifically patent prosecution

Thanks in advance!

Have a coworker who volunteers for work but never ends up doing it. At what point does it make sense to go to the partner to address this? We’re both midlevels, and I’m tired of having to put in even more time every weekend to pick up his slack. If this were a junior, I’d address it with them first, but this is unacceptable from a fifth/sixth year.

As a gift, my parents put down a large down payment on a condo in a VHCOL city. The house is in my name and I’m responsible for the rest of the costs. I had a housewarming the past weekend and invited a few of my colleagues. Today I had a meeting with a partner who suddenly congratulated me and said it must be nice to not have loans and own expensive property as a junior. I didn’t know what to say. Now other people in the office have come up to me and said the same thing…is my reputation ruined?

Is it strange that anyone at my firm (associates/partners) can look up where any lawyer is on billable time for the month? I’m a third year lateral, and my old firm didn’t do that. Is that normal? Feels invasive
