All my MBB friends are the same... Prep School, Ivy League, and on their way to an MBA 😝

PWC- because despite efforts by elite universities to build more diverse classes, prep school students have overwhelmingly better odds of getting into an Ivy undergrad. Above the more rigorous caliber of secondary education, prep school kids tend to have more stable families, access to all sorts of tutoring and paying school psychologists for bullshit ADHD diagnoses to get extra time on tests, and professional help to strengthen their college applications. When universities try to hit race quotas, usually they are first bringing in privileged minorities from wealthy families who are already high, or at least solid performers in good high schools. The level at which we allow our college admissions system to be gamed by the wealthy is truly appalling, and contributes to the socioeconomic stratification of American society

Chicago1 that wasn't the point I was making. MBB alums are likely from well to do backgrounds including ivies and prep school. The greater equalizer is MBA because a smart non ivy non prep student can still get into top programs

^ My MBB gets over 200 resumes from my Ivy alma mater for full-time and gives around 10 offers. Not a cakewalk for anyone.

them getting into MBB is a product of prep school and Ivy League. The relevant question is what MBA they're doing

I get the prep schools but why is ivy not an equalizer? it's just meritocracy at an earlier age.

^As a former high school teacher and someone who did my masters thesis in education policy (ironically at an ivy) i wholeheartedly second the above.

okay agreed. but do you think MBA admissions are better at this? why does that magically become the equalizer?

MBA programs overwhelmingly favor consultants, and consulting as an industry does favor the better educated, better upbringing folks. That's true of everything. But MBA admissions are a distinct product of 1) college grades 2) gmat score 3) recommendations 4) essays. While 2) and 4) are basically just like sat scores and college essays, recs in the workplace can show a lot more about a person and how they apply themselves from working than high school classroom. a student with a 3.9 at a good school but non ivy is also seen pretty favorably compared to a 3.9 at an ivy, so the whole socioeconomic status and ivy/prep biases don't carry as much weight

Discussion post: I feel almost all consulting firms are the same. Mbb, big 4 etc. if you are paid enough there is probably less wlb. If there is good wlb there is not much money. Can you single out a company that you can confidently say pays very well and also has good wlb and also has good opportunities etc.?

I am looking to gain certification or other credentialing in diversity and inclusion, not only because it would look good on my resume both for future job-search purposes and also to become better educated in this area, which is growing in importance. I looked at SHRM's "Inclusive Workplace Culture Specialty Credential" and got a bit of "sticker shock" at the cost - $1,655.00 for members. Does anyone have other suggestions on training/credentialing in this area?
