Agreed. As Churchill said, The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter.
Direct democracy works great––if you have the education system to match. The problem is that the democracy part is easy; the education part is really, really hard.
"You can lead a whore to culture, but you can't make her think." WC Fields or Mae West - not sure...
The problem is too much investment in public institutions. When the government has less control, people voting against your interests have less impact.
It was kind of funny and sad at the same time to see the reaction yesterday of a news anchor interviewing the guy that led the Leave campaign when she asked him when they could start to see the money they had been paying to the EU be redirected to education and health care and he said he couldn't guarantee it would. There was this look of "WTF have we done?"
Direct more money to healthcare and education than Britain already does?? ................dear god
"What is the EU?" Lol

So strong education to match? Does a strong education system raise the intelligence of the average voter? Just because an individual is educated doesn't mean they can't still be dumb
Yea I agree with you booz1. The only problem is that, no matter the type of person, a lot of people will choose what is immediately beneficial for them without thinking of the future. Too many people try and treat symptoms and not the disease. The most frustrating thing is that forward-thinking, future- oriented mentality can't be taught. You can lead a horse to water but you can't force it to drink
@BAH1, that's true about a lot of policy, but what about policies where we need a lot of govt control: military, foreign policy, etc?
Or California going bankrupt a few years ago. Free stuff, no taxes.. Yay!!!
@BAH2 I don't understand. I assume you're American and believe that the US needs a strong military to protect private property?
You may critic direct democracy. But take a look at what indirect democracies give us. You should spot Dysfunctional groups of people debating and doing nothing apart from trying to get elected next term by blaming others for problems.
@ey1 "If they don't agree with me, they must be uneducated!" If I've learned anything about organizational behavior from consulting, it is that even the dummies in clients' organizations are very astute at identifying what's good for them and picking it.
^^^ I like that a lot. Never heard it before
