You should totally take a knee during the next pitch.
A lot of you in the bowl are in a position to change things. I hear whining about diversity and inclusion but there are more mid to senior people on fishbowl than juniors. Feel free to fight for what you believe in, hire women and POC. Train them to the best of your ability and set them up for success. Give them a chance. Push back when your clients say something obtuse. Obviously don't get fired but stand up for what you supposedly believe in. I think if enough of us try things can change. I'm tired of being the only black woman in a meeting or being the token POC. ✊🏾
Agencies don't care until clients care. The General Mills pitch last year is a perfect example.
SVP1 This maybe kinda simple, but I don't think a lot of people of color / women know what an advertising creative department is or what people in it do. I don't think a lot of white guys know either, as a proportion of the whole population. I think a lot of people who get into the creative side, at least, do so because they know a friend or family member who does it. So you've got a self reinforcing cyle there. But our job isn't rocket science. With a bit of training almost any creative person can write headlines. I think if more college students and recent grads who weren't white guys knew ad creative was a thing, they'd be into it. So, basically I think the solution to the problem we have in advertising is...more advertising.
I'm into it. But it'll take a solve not a protest. I think about the root of this a lot. What's your take?
People love to watch overpaid athletes and overpaid ad people complain 🙄 That just reinforces what they already dislike.
