Almost a year ago myself and another associate let our firm leadership know our associate pay wasn’t up to our market as our main firm is based in another state. The issue was not really addressed but we were given a very small amount of money to show that we were heard. Brought this up a few months ago again without any resolution. Fast forward to recently, learned that another associate in our main office brought this issue up as to herself and was adequately compensated in response. Advice?

Of course she was. Why would you negotiate your salary with a buddy?

I didn’t. The associate that was compensated was a different associate from another office.

It may be for any reason. Did you bring in the firm at least 3x your pay? Do you have any special skills like 1st chair, bad faith?

I am project manager in clinical research industry (CRO). After earning PhD, I gave up my science dream to take a more stable job. After slowly climbing the ladders, I feel like I finally got a seat at the table. Half the days I like the hustle, but now I miss being creative. I want to take more brainstorming, decision making responsibilities but I don’t see that in the career path for PM. Career path usually goes like this- Sr PM, Director l, Sr Director, and so on. But all do same work.

I just accepted an offer in writing. The new job will start the background check next which I’ve been told it may take a while to complete. I don’t anticipate any hiccups in the background check but is it wise to wait until the background check is complete before turning in my notice?

For the married and/engaged ladies, did you have any pre-wedding jitters? I recently got engaged (yay!) and I have felt for a very long time that my partner truly is my soulmate. I feel guilty having these feelings when I couldn’t be more certain about the decision to marry him. Can anyone else relate?

Just needing a safe place to vent. We were extra vigilant about the holidays with our two kids under the age of 5 requiring everyone to test and be vaccinated and keeping our gathering extremely small. Nope…not enough. We are now quarantined because my kids can’t be vaccinated and are too young to wear masks. Thankfully my husband and I can rotate parental obligations so we can work, but I’m exhausted and it’s year end so extra busy.

A senior associate in my group just found out her spouse has cancer. I am a first year, and she has been an amazing mentor to me since I started (and before when I was a summer associate). Any advice on how I should offer support? A card feels insignificant in light of the situation, but I'm sort of at a loss for how else to show I'm thinking of her and her family during this time.

I quit. I was respectful. Thankfully, every person I have told has been so nice, and I wasn't immediately bounced out by my leadership (which has happened), but I have been surprised by my own bittersweet tears. If they actually cared, why didn't they say so sooner? I gave so much, and I was consumed by this organization. I invested in them, but my investment and dedication were not reciprocated, which is why I ever even entertained leaving. I don't know why it hurts, but it really, really does.

Best handbag / shoulder bag for work that is both professional and also convenient (e.g. can take work laptop, documents, food containers, water bottle)?

I’m currently a junior associate in a boutique litigation firm handling IP. I’ve taken a depo already, will argue in court next month and by all accounts, I am great at it. But I’m miserable. I find the games with opposing counsel exhausting and I despise writing briefs (even if I’m good at it). My pre-law school job was in public relations and I chose litigation because I like to win, but I’m now realizing I like success more than the win-lose. Feeling lost… should I move to transactional?

I was fired last month after a short time at the company. I knew things weren't going well- it was a terrible culture fit & I was also planning my exit strategy. They wouldn't give me specific reasons other than to vaguely say it was performance related. I agree I made a few dumb mistakes (none of any dire consequence) but what kills me is that I tried really hard. I don't want to change careers but I have a deep seeded fear that no matter how hard I try, I will never be a "good attorney".

I’m in a major city, firm is a boutique that has been around a very long time. What would you suggest? Any studies or research you’ve seen recently on trends in parental leave policies also helpful. I’d like to have some sort of data to back up what I recommend. TIA!

Fellow millennial lawyers: tell me, in general terms, 1 or 2 clients you acquired and how you acquired them. I feel like the suggested strategies for developing business are always the same: network, build your brand (hate this phrase), market yourself on LinkedIn, etc. Does any of this work? Seems to me to that most business development comes from long-standing contacts (e.g. your childhood best friend is now CEO and needs legal services), so I’m curious how other attorneys developed business.
