Excellent job OP. I think you nailed it and covered all key categories and brands. I agree with few others that mentioned Rolex is one level too high. It is probably the most popular brand but I agree that JLC is a higher quality of craftsman vs Rolex. Sure Rolex prices / aftermarket value very high but doesn’t mean it belongs where it does. Otherwise thank you for this post!

I love Louis Vuitton for a lot of things, Sunglasses, luggage, even shoes, but I’d never even think about buying an LV watch. Though I think Gucci has gotten a bit, well, I’m not a fan anymore, I’m surprised it was ranked below LV insofar as watches are concerned. Otherwise, learned about some brands I didn’t know existed, so thanks for this!

LVMH uses Swiss movements and has their own in-house movements. I think Gucci mainly has quartz watches and the upper limit is probably Sellita movements.

I really don’t understand the positioning of Rolex - for me it should be one tier higher (= tier 2). I feel you completely disregard their substantial precious metal offering and their innovation capabilities (skydweller et al).

-> Rolex must be upped a tier def.

funny

***Looks down at his wrist to see the watch he paid too much for because he wanted people to know he could afford it with tears in his eyes.***

Glashutte Original needs to be added for sure, and probably in luxury.

JLC is a weird one, but I would say more of their pieces fall into ultra luxury than luxury due to their vast offerings with grand complications.

Also I would shift Grand Seiko and possibly Zenith to Luxury if Rolex fits the bill.

Otherwise solid list

I’m a simple man. JLC > Rolex simply because it is more fun to say.

When your 22k chronoswiss is labeled an entry level luxury mall brand 🥲

funny

Chronoswiss was a tough one to place. I consider them more “Other” than “Mall Brand”. They had some popularity a couple decades ago, but struggle to find footing these days.

I’d add holy trinity to ultra lux! Especially because they’re quite popular among middle managers at fortune 100 and family businesses

Nicely done, it would be interesting to see the criteria used to classify them in those Tiers (i.e. price, complexity, designer, etc.)

Second slide added!

Maybe add zodiac

Note: they’re technically owned by Fossil now, but they’re far enough removed from the Fossil crap that they stand alone.

Fun!

It is pretty mind-boggling to see Hermes called mid-tier luxury anything, however.

The point is that Hermès makes extremely high-quality straps? I don’t see how this affects the ranking. Apple charges a lot more for the Hermès editions.

I’d move the Longines to the popular entry level. Too much history to be a ‘mall brand’

Ok, you convinced me. I was on the fence with Longines, and they do offer unique designs. They graduated to Popular (Non-WIS).

Interesting that you included Laco in the WIS category. I’m a big fan of the brand, but haven’t seen it get much love on here.

How is Montblanc ahead of Tudor? Unless you’re taking purely the Minerva collection.

Montblanc has some really nice pieces.

Great work. Maybe you can add some more differentiation and play with the positioning of the watches within the boxes (maybe you did). E.g. then I’d for example position Nomos, IWC and Omega at the upper end of their boxes. Hurts my feelings a bit too see such a visual gap between IWC/ Omega and Rolex/Jaeger.

What about IWC

They’re on there in the Mid-Tier luxury group.

“Lesser Known” - Luxury

Need some help. I’m looking for a starter watch to start building a collection. I like this style but looking to spend around 2k. Any ideas?

That’s amazing. Thank you!

Thinking of allocating 2K or so for a nice watch. Considering Tag, Tissot, Longines... any suggestions? Or should I just go for a Tudor at above 3K?

Wait a little longer and save an extra $1k to get a Tudor. The quality will blow those other brands out of the water

Surprised to see Ball as a non-WIS, given their new in-house, etc. but otherwise spot on

I agree mostly accurate... Richard Mille though I would probably move up to Upper Echelon, then I would put Hublot in its place. Maybe I missed it but I don’t see Hublot. They’ve made huge strides and have gone way upmarket from their origins.

Impressive work. Hamilton didn’t make the cut? 😅😅😅

They did, Entry Level Luxury, left side.

When weighing brand and value retention / appreciation I would put Rolex in top three. Holy trinity for me is patek, ap, Rolex.

Regarding the “peak idiocy” slide from lower down… this has to be the peak right? The froth is insane at this point. People, even non enthusiasts, are treating watches like a risk free investment vehicle which is a classic sign of the “euphoria” phase of a bubble IMO… if you take the rowlecks blinders off for a sec these things are nice but a 90’s sub with no papers is objectively not worth $15k.
