My take is that it makes it difficult to achieve hiring diversity that’s relatively equal to geographical diversity when the qualified candidate pool isn’t equally as diverse as well. That just creates situations where you have a quota so you pass on a qualified candidate solely because of their race. I think a better long term approach is to invest in development of underrepresented groups. Like what Girls Who Code has done for females in technology. Most major companies these days have diversity hiring initiatives. It’s certainly a good thing but it’s not enough.

1. Hiring funnel needs to be diverse. Its one thing if you only have 1 token black applicant and he doesn’t get the offer vs having more than just the token. 2. Discussions about “fit”—please, stop using generic terms like “culture” and “fit.” Instead, push yourself and your coworkers to actually define what about an individual makes him a good/bad fit. Hint, if they’re ashamed to verbalize it, it’s not a relevant point. 3. For interns/college recruiting—try to think of potential versus realized accomplishments, and differentiate between accomplishments that the kid hustled herself for, vs someone set it up for her.

Ya to your point CD1, the only time you should have all white men is if your product is only for all white men. If you want to sell to every demographic you need every demographic in there

Doesn’t diversity initiatives emphasize on racial differences? I.e. I thought any decision made with consideration to skin colour is bad. Including when you allocate “plus” points to being a visible minority.

I am currently unemployed but I am very curious about everyone’s company signature having she/her or he/him or they displayed. Are companies forcing people to write the pronouns you need to choose? I honestly never understood why somebody that wasn’t in the LGBTQ community would specify, and I know people are doing it to show support but if I started working again I don’t think I would want to put that in my signature. It seems political. What are your thoughts?

TFW you are so engrossed in your phone you realize you walked in and sat in a stall of the other gender's restroom ....then panicking to figure out how to leave.

On a call with the CEO talking about diversity and they compare a person with tattoos experiencing prejudice in the office to Black people colleague experiences... Meanwhile last I checked, a tattoo was a choice and removable. Also depending on placement, you can’t see it.
