Your interest in the corporate role is the first filter. If you’re very excited about it then it’s hard to argue with 50% increase now vs what sounds like several years still to more. After that, consider that while you have upward potential where you are you will also have upward potential in your Corp role. Maybe slower, but it’s not like you’re going to join and stay that level forever. Final thought: lots of strategy houses did a lot better in covid. If your firm didn’t then that performance might be a bigger consideration for whether you want to make partner than just how quickly it will happen.

Thanks, BCG1, great framework!

....so an entire partner class was moved back. I was hoping Yr 3 would be my final year at my level but it could easily extend for another 3 years. Have an offer to move into a F500 Corp Dev role at a 50% TC increase based on my current comp but ~30% discount to 1st year Partner. While I built out a cash flow analysis that assumes a flatter comp curve for Corp Dev than consulting, Corp Dev still wins when projecting out ~5 years (yes I know the error bars are there....). Question for Partners - am I crazy to bail at this stage of my career after crushing myself in consulting for nearly a decade when Partner *could* be close?

P1 - I do actually work in S& and am in a fairly similar position. Would love to get your insights and decision making framework, if you’re up for it.

P1 - thanks for the perspectives. FWIW I’m 31 yo, decent but not stellar sales #’s

Ah, you are plenty young! Young enough to even boomerang if you tried out the Corp role and decided it’s not for you.

If the role interests you and the company is a good fit, leave. Hard to argue with a 50% bump and the opportunity to make lasting impact. You can always return to consulting later if you want to, even at a more senior level.

There are also many people who think they are about to get partner.....7 years later they are in the same boat with (sometimes) equal/worse exit options

like

I’m not a partner, but I would say you are crazy to bail, unless they have made it known that you will not be a partner. How do your sales numbers look? The only risk would be if they are stringing you along because you are a key person on an account and they can’t afford to lose you, although they do not have plans to make you a partner. Do you have people at your firm you can trust? Again, if your sales numbers are looking good, and you are confident you will make partner - it’s just a matter of WHEN - I would absolutely stick it out, 2nd option being another consulting firm. Age also matters. At PwC, I’ve heard it doesn’t make financial sense to become a partner unless you are under 45.

What’s your long term goal? Do you want to be a partner in the long run?

I’m in similar boat. Been told I’m in the pipeline but pushed back 1-2 years. Other than the grind I’m not really that bothered by it. Corporate strategy/functional roles are tempting but if I’m honest I can’t imagine being in a non revenue generating role again (came from Corp to industry).

I was fired today. What do I do next? I’m a third year associate at a “boutique” firm. Although I knew my performance wasn’t good and I was on thin ice, I was never given any formal warning, so I was caught off guard when they called me and just fired me, effective immediately. I was locked out of the email and computer system before the call was over, and I’m already off the website. I was so caught off guard I hardly remember the conversation (cont)
