Any pressure I feel about taking vacation and the impact on my utilization and bonus potential is put there by myself. In D&I, the calculation is pretty simple, so if you have a particular bonus amount in mind, you can calculate the required billings/utilization pretty easily. Plus, you're not limited to charging 40 hours a week, so if you have the work, it's easy to "make up" or plan ahead for time you may want to take off.
In my team, the Managers/Directors/MDs are pretty good about respecting the workload you want to take on (within reason). If you want to work 55 hour weeks because you're saving up for something, they will give you work over someone who has communicated that they prefer more of a work life balance. Obviously, sometimes client needs may require beyond that, but they do try where they can.
Finally, I think there are some general guidelines re: acceptable utilization at different levels. In my office, I think they like to see Associates around 85% utilization, SA maybe a little lower at 75 - 85%, etc. As you go up, there's an expectation that you're doing more & more professional development, networking, selling, etc. that is not billable work. Also keep in mind that though your utilization may go down as you climb, it's offset in part by higher billable rates.
D&I - Disputes & Investigations. Everyone takes vacations, it's a regular thing.
I can speak to the first part of the question. I think more than the guilt it’s the staffing challenges that really sucks. E.g. someone is on the beach for a few weeks and get staffed right over their planned PTO. If this happens, they are either staffed anyway and have to deal with it, or they are passed over for someone else. Both of which sucks
But if you’re well staffed and you take a week or so every now and then I think it’s totally fine. One needs to take a mental break and it can’t be about collections all the time.
MC1 are you working for A&M ?
Yes I am
MC1 would it be possible for you to connect over DM and provide more insight on how staffing usually works at A&M ?
