As a female, wouldn’t be comfortable raising the issue with my senior and / or HR. I know they would never be on my side and carpet the issue(s) or worse, fire me the first chance they get. Know a few other females who feel the same way, but dare not speak up for fear of losing their jobs. If enough females feel similarly, might be why Finance hasn’t yet come under the purview.
Didn’t think about this point before now...
But now that I think about it - no.
Thinks it’s brewing a bit in the background and people are nervous about it. It did more than you would think though- finance has just done a better job keeping it out of the news. The Paul Dexter / CS M&A story comes to mind and JPM lost a VP this summer for an intern issue...
I’ve had issues in the past and all my mentors advised me not to bring it up. I’ve also seen other women that did bring it up (some serious sexual harassment), and absolutely nothing was done about it! It’s very discouraging but what else can you do? Taking legal action is too risky and can damage your reputation if it doesn’t work out. It’s not easy being a woman in banking.
I’ve actually heard exactly what IBAna1 said from multiple women in the industry- including at the MD level. Which is why I think GS1 is ultimately right here- I stand by it is starting to build though. Think you’ll see it more from interns and analysts who are a generation less willing to put up with this BS, know how to use social media, and have less to lose in the sense they’re not already making tons of money (and the sunk cost of years of getting harassed they’ve already dealt with)
I actually talked to the head of PR at my firm about this late last year. She said it scares the shit out of her and one thing that keeps her up at night. That said her view was that Wall Street had it’s me too movement late 80s to mid-90s and have taken many steps since to mitigate the problem. She did not think it’s a systemic issue on Wall Street such as it is in the entertainment industry where many issues went unchecked since.....well ever.
