Well you should have informed your PM in any case . If you were the PM, how would you feel if someone suddenly left and you don't have time to look for a replacement ? I am no PM and I have taken medical leave because I fell really sick on a high stress project. But I still made sure the PM was comfortable before I left
To be clear: I have worked with many situations where team members had to take medical leave (including mental health), and we ALWAYS made accommodations. But if a team member told me on Friday that they wouldn't be there on Monday, I wouldn't have a problem telling them how much of a bind that puts us in. Especially if they had known about it for a while, as you seem to.
I hope you get the recovery you need, but next time act like a professional.
Good for you for standing up for yourself in that conversation though
Respond slower
Ok based on this new information I am on your side.
And this is why you don't act entitled to someone else's work or professionalism or lead time or whatever the fuck else. You don't know what they're dealing with, or why it was so abrupt. A normal person would take the abrupt nature of it as indication that things were REALLY serious, and if they needed anything, it should be after wishing the employee well and asking if they'd even be able to help out or just share the OneDrive link for all the files related. Y'all gotta stop with this self important bullshit, work is not that serious. Health is.
He's known I had a medical condition since early December. He basically outed me in an email even though we'd discussed my limitations in person. I'd been struggling with this issue and got a doctor's note limiting travel. But he was incredibly passive aggressive about it.
Also I found out on Wednesday night after going to urgent care, I told my direct leadership on Thursday morning. They told him on Friday morning. He got about as much lead time as I did. And whatever lack of communication, trust and common courtesy there was on my part is something that he helped nurture With his abusive and distrustful management style
At the end of the day his response is still all about him, it is in stark contrast to my CC and MD who showed their humanity by being concerned for my well-being first and handling project come me without stopping to harassment and violating HIPPA
You aren’t in the wrong, OP. We aren’t saving lives in this job. Take care of yourself first!
If I were the PM and you did this to me I would be pissed too. You acted very unprofessionally and put your relationship with the client at risk. Just be up front about what you need. If you have to take some time off, just give your project team enough time to make the adjustment.
Told me I needed to do x,y,z before my leave kicks on Monday, tells me I've put him in a very bad position with the client, said he didn't know why I was on leave... I stopped him and said this conversation is not appropriate. He got aggressive and said he's the PM in the project, I report to him. Mind you this is the first time he's reached out to me in two months. He said, "Why didn't you tell me yesterday when you were in the office?" - I snapped and said, "You are one of the reasons I need to do this, this is obviously not a conversation I am comfortable having with you." Now I feel bad. But he just wouldn't berating me. I already feel bad enough.
Before his unexpected call I was trying to figure out if I could do reduced work hours. Not any more.
That sucks. Ugh. Well, take the time you need obviously. You don't owe him anything. You owe yourself your health and sanity though
Oof I can’t imagine anyone at pwc would be such an asshole
OP, are you going on short term disability leave? I just came off of it. Let me know if you have any questions. Wish you the best
Doesn't matter if you're pissed. Other people's lives aren't about your ease of work. Someone going on a medical leave is not the person to offload your pissed feelings on. FOH
Assoc 2 it's not always that simple. And the PM should have enough humility to realize how serious it must be, and even if they felt like they were blindsided, the common sense not to call and berate someone in that position. Like wtf.
Honestly SM1 the entire point is that someone shouldn't have to share their entire life and medical history to garner any kind of compassion. Seriously, if a leave is on the table, you already know it's important and non negotiable and stressful. What prevents you from giving the benefit of the doubt initially, especially when someone is in a vulnerable position? Character. It's character that prevents it.
I cannot believe even the minor amount of judgement op is getting. Most people in this profession aren’t flakes looking to scam the firm for benefits or leave their clients hanging. Why does minor client inconvenience supersede OP’s health? And no, you can’t always anticipate what happens with chronic conditions - sometimes they flare to the point where it necessitates total rest. Op was already trying to do part time and what he could to make it work.
Hope you get better soon OP. Health always is a priority.
Take care of yourself first, the PM will get over it.
