You are 31? Yup your life is over.
Let me tell you what you don't want to hear.
Stop winning like a 13 year old. Get hold of your self and move on. The attitude you are showing will do nothing but keep you down.
Wow here's the reason why people find consulting toxic
I can guarantee that approximately 0.0% of the population views a MBB job as success in life.
But 100% of MBA grads know what MBB is and there is shame amongst them, honestly MBAs are the worst about titles.
Girll or boy- chill out!!!
I finished my MBA from an M7 at almost 33. I don’t know where you are getting your inflated stats, but less than 30% of people who tried to get into consulting at my firm got a job in the field at all, much less at MBB. MBB is extremely competitive.
I also “failed” to get a job at MBB. I “failed” to even get interviews at 2/3 of the firms. I did an internship at a small boutique consulting place, did NOT get an offer. Then I was hired full time at a T2 and knew I was going to get cut before the 2 year mark, so I left. I went to a boutique consultancy. I didn’t do very well there either and am now working in the job of my dreams in industry.
YOU control the narrative. Consulting is not for everyone. Not getting into MBB does NOT make you a failure.
You are smarter and have higher earning potential than most people in the world.
Feel free to DM for advice. I went through a LOT of ups and downs before I made it here, but I’m so happy.
It takes time to find something that makes sense for you. Please don’t compare yourself to other people. I’m WAY behind my classmates. I’m also an average of 5 years older. I have found what matters to me and what I prioritize. And I can still be happy for them!

Yup. Applied for jobs out of my masters for 7 months before taking a temp job at $40k per year (2009). Didn’t get hired. Found another hourly admin job, $11/hour. Developed a mental illness, got arrested, got fired, was too embarrassed to tell my mom or work so lived on a friend’s couch. Worked 5 years at a place and only went from $45k to $65k. Finally left for a manager job because they threatened to lay me off. Spent 4 years at the other company and REALLY fit into the culture better. Finally found my groove. Started at $85k, left at $165. Have been in consulting 3 years now and I’m at $450 Total Comp. You have to find a place that appreciates your talents and a mentor to help you grow.
MBB is overrated. Strategy studies suck. I’m 32 and I just joined and I am leaving at 33.
Depends on the tech you are implementing. If it’s a new/hot market then these firms are underbidding with obscene timelines to corner the market. Maybe I’m at the wrong place but when you get an unrealistic timeline from sales, you’re going to be working round the clock.
Your first two big mistakes here are defining yourself by your job and comparing to others. That will be either the road to sustainable success nor the way to happiness.

Sorry to be blunt, but it sounds a little bit like you’re making excuses - e.g., “did not have the courage to try hard enough.” The fact you then bombed in your next job (which takes a sustained effort a period of time, as opposed to a one-off moment like an interview) suggests to me your shortcomings aren’t momentary. Instead of trying to shift to MBB now, you may be better off working on how to address that first, so that you can perform better at your current job. The bar is higher at MBB so switching is only going to make your relative performance worse.
Agreed. Working hard to overcome the lame self is the only way to move forward
Hot take: being in consulting = failing at life 🤣🤣 signed, a consultant who is asking themselves why tf they chose this as their 3rd career and will be leaving after saving up enough
Are you kidding? I get to effect real and positive change at a bunch of organizations, I consistently get staffed on awesome projects and my leadership supports me, I get to constantly meet new people and learn about new industries and companies, people treat me with more respect than I ever received in industry, my expertise is actually valued and utilized, the pay is great, my coworkers are really nice, I work from home 95% of the time, no one is ever “out to get me” (I have unfortunately real horror stories from my previous job), I’m about to move to an even nicer apartment and I’m able to put more in savings than ever.
Tell me how it’s failing at life. I’m listening.

Is he still on here? Probably whining again about work/life balance....

Bruh I was you but younger. All my MBA friends were at IB or MBB and I was like at ACN. I was discouraged and disappointed at myself. So I networked hard and got into T2 firm and honestly have never been so depressed in my life as I was for the 1 year I spent in T2 “Strat” consulting. I took a pit stop in the start up world for a year and now am finally feeling human again - now I’m questioning if I just want to go industry or chase another 2-3 years at an operating style consulting firm (A&M/ACN) to round out my overall experience to 5 YoE in consulting.

AP1 it does. I’ve not tied my personal accomplishments to my job for a while now. I do want to switch back to consulting for a bump in pay and some stability.

Buy some Dramamine day formula for work. You need ginger root. Lol
Awwwwwwwww, you didn’t get your participation trophy? I get it, you are used to success coming easy but let me tell you, it’s the down times where you persevere OR crumble that truly matter. Pull yourself together, stop the “woe is me” attitude and put whatever education (you are obviously wasting) to work to figure this out yourself. You have 25-30 years more to work, get it together.
Because you can imagine an alternate, reasonable scenario is exactly why you chose the cynical route? Not quite sure that makes sense, but alright.

I don't understand these posts. You're fishing for compliments and pick-me-ups, so I'd say the biggest problem is your insecurity not your professional track record.
I bet you're gonna get a kick out of even people who say you're "out of touch" because that, in a sense, is some kind of validation you're looking for.
this is what i call a truth bomb

Some people here have been encouraging but I frankly have to call you out on your toxic and disrespectful attitude. Because you’re kind of insulting a lot of big 4/ non MBB folks that are on this sub.
I know a ton of low quality classmates who got into MBB. It’s not a measure of success. A lot of things can play into it, one of which is luck.
I think you need to just do some self reflection and change your approach to things.
Wow, you guys are being assholes. Leave OP alone. Has no one ever felt defeated, stuck and option less? I know I did. And consulting isn’t for everyone.
OP is asking a genuine question and the first thing we do as a community is show our balls. If you aren’t going to be helpful, keep it to yourself. What a shame. Just because you had a hard time growing and learning, doesn’t mean people around you have to go through the same difficult path. That’s what true leadership is. Making it easier for others to trek along the same path. And for all you consultants out there that think you are the shit for consulting. You ain’t. Stay humble.
And OP consulting isn’t for everyone. Frankly; consulting is shit. That’s why we see people spend a few years in it and then leave. The hours are crappy, and you loose sight of your personal self while you are in it. Sounds like you do need to do a bit of soul searching though. I suggest signing up for CareerLeader. Their assessment is comprehensive and gives you suggestions on what youd be good at. Good start.
A2, you think saying "consulting isn't for everyone" means you're a failure? It could be unkind if it's said in a way to disregard someone else's perspective, but I didn't take this comment that way.
Everyone has a unique set of skills, interests, and abilities. Add that to personal goals and life circumstances and you'll find that yeah, certain careers may not be for everyone for a litany of reasons.
I didn't enjoy consulting and performed below my expectations for myself. Not a failure, I just needed to find a career that aligned better with everything I mentioned above. I could never make it as a doctor or a journalist, but again, that's because there are other types of roles more conducive to my success (that yes, still require significant effort for me to succeed).
Failure is a mindset, not an outcome.
Don’t you still get paid like 180k a year ???
Now I feel myself a failure...

This is really sad to read. You’re 31 years old and you’re whining, comparing yourself to your friends…
Be grateful for the opportunities you have. So many people want your spot and to have what you have. Comparison is the thief of joy and pessimism kills all goals.
Change your perspective and get after whatever you want
