You already have the brand
How long do you have to stay at a firm to get “the brand”? Does that go away if you leave before your promo and go to a less well known place?
Coach
Take the job, may not even need an MBA if you make it far enough quickly
Mentor
Yes, you’re an idiot. Put it in your story that you wanted to focus on whatever industry or speciality the boutique does or that they offered a faster avenue to leadership.
Mentor
Yeah they do. It’s about framing your story/decisions and conveying you know what you want
Your current organization doesn't fall off your resume, you already have the brand name. The move sounded like a promo (progression).
Mentor
Yes this is dumb
Subject Expert
Yes you ARE🙄
Need to know base. Is this 150% of 40k, 60k, 80k or 100k
^this is the right answer. You should be thinking more about advancement and comp schedules early in your career vs discrete percent increases.
Mentor
OP - is this summary accurate?
3 options:
A) Stay at current well known but not MBB firm making ~70k base
B) Go to less known boutique firm making $175k base
C) Go to MBB making $105k base
You want to apply to bschool in a few years and worried about brand names. So you want to optimize for bschool admissions + $$$?
Mentor
Yeah what A1 said. If OP is a BA now, they’ll likely be an analyst at MBB. So $85-90k base with 15-20% bonus which aligns to the low 100s figure
Mentor
Go to the boutique - it won’t make an iota of difference for MBA school. Your grades and professional development will play a bigger factor in admissions.

This is a tough choice. I don’t envy you. This will be painful no matter which way you go.
Here’s a question: which one does your gut lean to?
Enthusiast
Let’s go with MBB! It’s not a clear slam dunk but does seem to be both the crowd favorite, aligns with your goals, and what you want deep down.
As a plus, others mentioned it but the comp acceleration & MBA $$ will make up for the $75/year * 2 years you’ll be down.
Why do you even need an MBA right now if you have an offer for almost $200k??
How underpaid are you?
No, not worth it.
Definitely an interesting choice, your current firm will still be on your resume.
Follow up question: Take this offer or an offer from a top brand name for 50% bump?
If you for sure want an MBA, I’d take your MBB offer so they will sponsor you.
Mentor
Why do you think MBB has less brand name recognition 😂
Mentor
Didn’t see follow up question, my bad
Yes
Mentor
So you have an offer for close to 200k?
MBB is a great way to get an MBA. Idk abt the boutique consulting firm...would depend.
Consider your competitive positioning in 2-3 years, are you an MBB person competing against MBB + boutique ppl, or boutique person competing against MBB + boutique ppl? MBB does very well at top b schools, and the skills you learn are legit some of the best for future success in a variety of roles. I think you’re more competitive coming from MBB.
Not an MBB person myself but I know a few from my MBA days and none of them were dumb, and all of them had very strong exit opptys / post MBA opptys
It’s not all about the money
I just turned down a 100% raise. You’re welcomed
