Am I completely bugging or is this a crazy ask? Someone reached out to me via LinkedIn from an agency that manages fast-fashion brands.

She asked me what I charge for 100-word product descriptions and I said I would charge about $350 for 10 descriptions. That puts me at around a half hour for each description - for a grand hourly of $70/hour.

She comes back with someone writes 100, 100-word descriptions per day for $300.

I’m like…. what? Should I propose a lower quantity or disregard?

Do you need the gig? If not… Your response: “Then call that person.” (Odds are she’s on a time crunch)

Tell her to go with that person then

Also, I’ve found that clients wants a discount from the start tend to be more difficult in other areas too

Sooooo much this.

Sounds like a no. Don’t let someone lowball you, your rates are your rates.

Sounds like she wants about 90% off your already low rate. So…no?

You should politely say that’s sounds like a fantastic deal and that you recommend going with that person. Don’t include sass just call their bluff

likesmartfunny

Haha I love that! 🤣 I politely said I couldn’t lower my rates for their project but your way is so much more fun

like

Ah, yes. They’re looking for a Discount Lion Safari! Just reply with the link to Fiverr. Someone who thinks $.03 USD per word is an appropriate rate isn’t worth talking to.

Ha was she on Fiverr?

You would think! They low-ballers are now infiltrating LinkedIn! 🙄

Don’t walk. Run from that so-called gig.

Raise your rates high enough so that anyone who sees it is instantly convinced that you are the very best. Pricing is positioning.

If I don’t put it on the market, the market may crush soon. Dilemma....

Additional Posts in Copywriters

“So, what’s your process?” has GOT to be the silliest interview question for a writer. Today I finally answered honestly that there’s no formula for this. You either have it or you don’t. Talent and some amount of fairy dust is what makes it happen.

Advice on dealing with criticism of your writing? I write, my supervisor rewrites it, then her supervisor rewrites that. By the time it gets back to me, I just want to go with what the last person came up with because it's so much better than what I wrote, and I'm so weary of the repeated exercise. The process is taking the joy out of writing and negatively affects how I feel about the writing I do outside of work for mere enjoyment.

What’s better? (Both in NYC)
1. agency: variety of some big brands, ability to build portfolio, lower salary

2. in-house: nothing fancy to show for portfolio, creating the voice for the brand, higher salary (30-50k higher)

Anyone else get tired of the LinkedIn charade? Every day I see countless posts by people in advertising/marketing that come across as preachy, self-indulgent, humble brags that annoy me.

Like, the pompous CEO/CD who writes a long post about that time he hired an intern and learned a valuable life lesson that we could all learn.

Or the super-duper smart Copywriter who regurgitates Olgyvisms that we’ve all read a billion times to show his or her worth.
