I know all of those programs. I turned knowing those into a job where I made 7 figures a year. To think that an agency expects someone to know them and pay 75k is not only insulting. It’s delusional
An AD with with all those skills walks into an interview.
Interviewer: ehhh you’re book isn’t conceptual enough, sorry
Don’t forget html, css, JavaScript, cinema 4d, and the complete MS office suite
Who has time to not only learn the programs, but also be good in them? Maybe I’m just an old fart now. 😔
AD1: fuck no bud. I was too busy working to fully learn editing and after effects, not to mention 3D. But also, these positions are like 75k. They are asking too much for too little.
As I writer, the last thing I want is for my partners to spend all their time editing and comping to ridiculous degrees. The result is polished turds. Ideas should still be number 1.
As a writer who defaults to TextEdit, will work in Google Docs, but whines about Word docs, I can't even fathom dealing with the horseshit tech "pre-reqs" I see posted for my AD brethren.
It’s ridiculous.
@AD1 There’s more to this job than programs. Learning about other crafts can be useful too, e.g. photography, illustration, editing, WRITING, etc. No one is an expert at everything we touch. It’s impossible.
Some of the best CD ADs I’ve worked with can’t use programs for shit, but could whip up the most gorgeous reference board you’ve seen in no time at all. So much of our job is curation. It’s not all executional.
Maybe if you were a designer, but even then, you’d be highly specialized to be an expert in 3D. Also what AD has time to learn Maya?! 😂
Jira/Blender/Maya are not common skill sets and aside from SVA there really aren’t any schools teaching those programs to designers/art directors. I do agree the skill set expected of art directors and designers is incredible, I wish more companies put effort into investing in our professional development through expensable classes or something....
“Knowing” editing, after effects and C4D is an immense skill set. Anyone of those with depth is worthy of a 6 figure salary. If anything, one should be forgetting two in lieu of getting better at the other.
As an ACD you don’t know these things?
OP: you’re not crazy. There are way more of you than there are of AD1
UX consultant 1. No crap. Everyone’s toolset is changing. However if you’re expected to be a plumber, an electrician, a framer, and a drywall expert, it’s time we get more than 75k. Or we say eff off and bring your own great ideas. Of course we all need to learn new things and tools, but I don’t want an amateur electrician to rewire my house. Get it?
Designers toolkits are constantly changing!
Damn you SDAD1, you magnificent bastard! 😉
AD2: damnit, you’re right!
@OP - not your bud. Good for you to fully learn editing and AE + 3D.
Most schools highly recommend (require) students to learn those programs because “the industry is competitive”.
Having said this, I’m assuming the CD or people of higher positions set this bar for people entering the workforce. They write the job requirements, right?
Of course, there are specialized modelers, lighting team, illustrators but it’s important for ADs and even CWs to learn the basics of these programs in order to communicate with them when working together
We don’t have the time to learn all the programs but we should make time to get acknowledged in the programs.
Agreed that companies are asking for too much for little pay, but that’s way the previous generation shaped the industry.
Maybe we just say no? We can do that right? It’s not like an AE is telling us what to do. But yea, I consider this bonus knowledge, not a prerequisite.
I say spend more time thinking of great ideas and helping others make them into fruition. But maybe that’s the old definition of an art director
AD3... you misunderstood me... No need to be so grumps lol. I was adding to the fact that our tools become expired fast and shit is crazy...
Okay but this is the damn tea.. amen sis!!!
