Ha! I’m at GS and we try to tell our MDs and HR that analysts actually care about this kind of thing these days so we need to think differently about the weight of the brand and the association with mental health. I don’t think they’re picking up what we’re putting down, but glad to know we’re not making it up.
As for you, it’s a personal choice. It’s a tough environment but it opens doors. I hate to say it because I want my juniors to stay forever, but 2 years at GS and you can go do whatever you want after.

FO = you interact with clients directly. Your division brings revenue.
BO = you do not interact with clients. Your department supports or manages risks for the FO folks.

Here is a funny scenario. I chose those definitions carefully because, let’s say that Fidelity is a GS client. The FO guys will work out deals with Fidelity. Compliance will review the deals, Ops will process these deals, Controllers will do whatever they do with the deals. Sometimes there is an issue and the Ops guy will need to reach out to Fidelity. Be careful because what GS will do to promote Ops roles is sell you on how you get to interact with clients while in Ops. It’s true-ish. Ops can reach out to Fidelity, but they will be reaching out to Fidelity Ops. GS FO is reaching out to Fidelity FO. GS BO is reaching out to Fidelity BO.

Do you have a long-term goal in mind that a job at Goldman will help you achieve? Either because you’ll learn skills, meet people, or just get the resume brand?

If it specifically suits a long term purpose it may be an excellent short term (1-2 year) trade. but i can’t tell because the group and your goals weren’t stated.

If you’re just brand collecting with no end in mind it is unlikely to be fulfilling or a good use of your life.

No, that’s called having self awareness. Money isn’t everything…

Most people join these firms for 1-2 years, hammer it out and go elsewhere. It will look great on your resume for the future companies.

Do you believe showing 2 years of experience for job to job is good look?

Tbh I think it could be worth a shot for 1-2 years to collect the paycheck and rubber stamp your resume if you think you'll be okay. Nothing wrong with self awareness saying you wouldn't be able to handle it tho

I’m coming up on 2 years and am prepping to move on - I don’t regret my time and I’ve learned a lot, but my health and stress levels could have been better had I worked elsewhere.

No. You’re making a brilliant choice. If you can find happiness without having to fill your life with “things” I encourage you to do so. Once happiness becomes tied to things, you’ll always chase the money.

You won’t know what you are capable of until you do it. I was in a similar spot to you recently and am glad I still took the offer. As AD1 stated above, if you really can’t handle it, just do 1-2 years and the experience/brand will pay great dividends for later in your career.

Lol I work at GS now. Choose carefully. Great resume place, asterisk type effect on mental health.

No it’s def not dumb. You have to consider what suits you best at this point in your life and also your other options. For me there are so many options now with flexibility that I could never go back to 5x a week in office. Consider the commute and how much you like the actual job offered…good luck in your search!

I declined GS twice due to worries about work life balance and pay wasn't much difference; 10-15% higher. Haven't regret it once. Now their recruiters are contacting me again. If you regret, I'm sure you'll get another chance given their high turnover rate.

What group in the firm was the offer from?

No, no job is worth your mental health. Work life balance is what all companies should aim for.

Depends how much you value your mental health. It seems like you do. That is invaluable.

You’re not.

I don't think this is dumb at all. Your health both mental and physical is worth so much more than money. What do you want to gain from GS that you couldn't get from another organisation? Is it only the incremental pay?

If it was my only offer, I would consider taking the offer in order to challenge myself and see if I might enjoy their culture and workstyle, but also being extremely mindful that it is only a job and that if it turns out that I am not enjoying it, then its not me.

like

I think more than anything, the industry and much of society would want you to think that’s a dumb move. But the reality is that mental health is crucial (as you’re aware).

As long as you’re in the same page with that, i think what matters most is, if you made that choice based on good evidence that it would negatively impact your mental health. (As opposed to a speculative fear)
