Am I the only one that thinks that members of Congress should be paid the median salary of their state? They are supposed to be a representative example of their constituents, so feel that it’s only fair.

No, the cost of living and demands aren’t in line with the jobs of their state. Though, I don’t think they should have special access to healthcare.

I agree with their salary shpuld be tied to the median wage in their states. Maybe 2.5x or something like that to make sure there is incentive for professionals to take time off their career to serve a term. I also agree with congressional housing. Which could reduce the mentioned multiplier. I am ok with a solid pension so long as they are banned from working in any firm or company they could have benefitted while in congress. Although enforcement on this will be tricky to figure out. Defintely a ban on lobbying after exiting congress.

What's the point of being a representative of Nebraska or Idaho then? 😂

Interesting question and I thank OP for bringing attention to it. I don't support limiting salaries of public officials. That would further restrict the talent pool of people interested to serve public office, especially young people. They shouldn't have access to big fat pensions and healthcare that's out-of-line with current market rates though. For context, I live in IL. DB pensions that public officials and employees have made in the past is a big reason why we're on the path to junk-bond status and significant sources of tax revenue are leaving the state. Secondarily, the money that politicians and/or their families can make on the side via speeches, corrupt non-profits, corrupt lobbyists, and insider information sickens me though. Admittedly, I don't know the quantification of these factors and the relative significance, but I guess I still get frustrated that this goes on nonetheless.

Both SO and I are new in our careers, about a year+ in. Looking for advice as we start our personal finance and investment journey: pay off consumer debt before maxing out 401k? And where does student debt and/or mortgage fit into the picture? FWIW, both of our parents probably won’t be able to retire anytime soon, so can’t get much advice from family.
