On the wrist (hard to see clearly) — Longines Legends Diver? Thoughts?
Sidenote, if you’ve never seen this man play tennis before… Tremendous feet of human athletic ability. He uses a wheelchair and has won multiple medals in the Paralympics!

To me the Sub feels kinda like the BMW 3 series. Great pedigree, defined a whole new genre (luxury sports sedan), came up with a few cool variants ...hulk, smurf (think BMW M3) but overall feels like it has gotten less imaginative with very new iteration!
Totally realize that I’m in the small minority of watch enthusiasts in feeling this way!

Not for nothing but the original 3 series was a coupe (as a successor to the 02)- not a sedan, let alone a luxury sports sedan.
911 is the analogy: purpose built as a sports car/dive watch, design has barely changed in 50 years, cool variants (GT3/GT4, Turbo, etc), and a class leader for sports cars/dive watches.
No, the Submariner isn’t on the cutting edge, but neither is the 911 - look how long it took Porsche to make a water cooled engine (answer: 1998). McLaren and Ferrari are building hybrids but the 911 is still available with three pedals.

I don’t own a sub since I agree that they’re a bit of an uninspired choice, but there is something special about the Rolex sports watches. You can wear one with a suit to work and then with a t shirt on vacation and it won’t look out of place. You can wear it in the ocean and to the top of a mountain. The appearance is classic of a bit unremarkable in the grand scheme of watches, but it hits a ton of good points, and there’s a ton of history behind them.
It won’t replace a dress watch but you can’t wear a vintage or a skeleton or a dress watch the way you can wear a Sub or an Explorer or a GMT. I’m not one to buy *only* Rolex sports watches like others on here - one is enough. But despite the other pieces in my collection, I still grab mine more often than not.
Well stated - perhaps I don't find myself in situations where I need the versatility (or maybe I pack too many watches!)

Going to catch some flack for this I think the same could be said for the 5711. The 5712 is a whole other story, but to me the 5711 is just plain, and uninteresting other thank being expensive and hard to get.
It sounds like you just prefer watches look more complicated than most people prefer, that's all (this is perfectly fine everyone has different taste)
Not always complicated, but even my first vintage "luxury" watch - a 50s Polerouter I picked up off a friend - feels like it has more character than what I see on most wrists today. Admittedly, it could be because my first non-Casio growing up was a mildly beat up old Bulova Accutron that I loved which was given to me by my father (and still occupies a slot in the watch case...).

Never been a fan of the black sub, just not exciting enough for me. Huge fan of the Hulk & Smurf as they both brought the extra pop I’m always missing when looking at a sub.
Most skeletons are not particularly versatile. They aren’t the easiest to read and many are handwind with low WR.
They do have character, some much better than others, and I like them, but I get why many people like the “safe” submariner (as do I).

On the wrist is a whole different experience.
I own a sub and agree the sub and many rolexes look boring/ dull compared to other watches out there. However I feel in a collection there must be at least 1 Rolex. I still enjoy and looks great wearing it with a suit or casual.
