Am I the only one who doesn’t care about promotion? I’m happy as long as I am not bored / have something to do everyday, and working with fun / nice people

This attitude will take your further than those trying to play the game. Keep doing good work, being good to people, and good things will come.

Some of you seem to be tying “not caring about promotion” to never being promoted. I think this is not at all associated in this way. Being promoted should be, and typically is, a result of demonstrating skills at the next level. Motivating yourself through intellectual engagement and the strength of work relationships is a much more authentic, sustainable, and typically more effective method than motivating yourself by thoughts of promotion and compensation increases. If anything, I think attitudes like this in competent, hard working individuals often result in more (not less) promotion.

Agree with Director. I hope you’re on one of my teams.

That’s fine, but when other people are doing the work at the next level, it’s nice for them to be recognized for it. If they are not, they feel taken advantage of and will seek out greener pastures

There have been discussions about this before in a few bowls, but my observations of young consultants and my own personal experience is that those who are doing good work because they enjoy it, who are hungry and humble, and who prioritize being a good team mate because they care about being a good person rise much faster than those who spend a lot of mental energy thinking about when and how to get promoted. At most firms, promotions are fairly meritocratic and our upward trajectory happens so much faster than in most other industries. While you may get held back six months or a year here or there, ultimately that’s nothing in the timeline of your lifelong career. Folks who get hung up or bent out of shape over what are ultimately small timeline setbacks have conceptualized their career in a way that normally doesn’t help them stay happy or succeed faster. What I read from the OP reminded me of I how felt early in my career, happy to be here and be challenged and meet smart people. I worked hard and was the recipient of early promotions, which I was excited about but had not been angling for. I was rewarded for delivering, but the promotion wasn’t my focus. Many people I see making it long term in consulting have a similar outlook.

I know this question wasn’t posed for me, but I’d like to throw some input. From what I’ve seen here, as well as my personal experience with it, I think a lot of us tend to care about compensation most when it is compared amongst our peers. That said, a high end SC/M salary is enough for most anyone to live a good life and be satisfied with comp. I think the difficulties come when your social peer group within your firm are surpassing you significantly in compensation. At that time, it really is up to oneself to allow or disallow those type of comparisons

OP , you are not alone. I feel the same 😊. I believe it’s ok to take time , working hard and doing your work sincerely properly is much more important. Getting bothered unnecessarily is not my type too.

I am with EY and can tell you the Director is right. And she (judging by the little icon)is certainly not part of the problem. I think there’s absolutely nothing wrong with being ambitious and wanting to get promoted, but it is a problem when that takes over doing the right thing for the client and our people. EY6, PPEDs might have different styles, but at the end of the day our rubric is the same - are you doing the right thing and making an impact in the market, for our people and for our firm. And it’s not a selfless thing either, at the end of the day, my retirement is paid by the earnings of future partners, you guys, so I want the best people. Do we make mistakes and are some of us assholes? Yep. But if all we did was play games and promoted all the wrong people, we wouldn’t be here either.

well, I work on client engagement and PD /BD work, not bc I want to be promoted, but because I enjoy working with my group. Of course it would be nice to get promoted/recognized, but I won’t fight for it, eager to know the result, or even thinking about it in my mind. There are tons of more meaningful things in life, compared to a single promotion

EY 6 🤷🏼‍♀️ I’m not at EY and I don’t know what all drama is going down with the changes to your performance management stuff is, but my mentees trust me and have been very happy with their paths overall even when there have been minor disappointments, and I have made it clear I am happy to take any analyst/associates/managers into my circle if they want to reach out. Bitterness is silly.

like

D1 you’re part of the problem. We have to play the game because we don’t trust you and other PPEDs. A majority of us already have the skills for the next level, you just force us to do a dog and pony show to demonstrate it to you through a varying/unstandardized rubric (each PPED has their own criteria of how they want to see us bend over backwards). Do you think anyone of us actually cares about assisting with 90% of the firm activities you want us to do?

like

Great outlook. Honest q here. What happens when you get to or already are in a higher range of your salary band. Whilst the promo title may not be a goal, I expect compensation would strike a nerve?

like

D1. How is wanting to or aspiring to being promoted after putting in the time, effort, and good work considered playing the game? Just curious.

like

Ahh gotcha. Good points. I can see where you’re coming from. I’m hoping to make it long term so when you put things into perspective like that it makes sense. I think we can all get caught up in the moment or think of things at that very second that we fail to see the long term plans that are ahead.

I totally care about promotions. If I am busting my ass to deliver top notch work and do a bunch of extra curricular stuff for the company - you better promote me. Increase my pay and give me the promotion

like

It's not about compensation or just the title... it's about reaching your maximum potential... if at a point I dont think I'm being challenged or truly believe I can do much more, I will start asking for a promotion. Because no matter what one says, there are soooooooo many things you cant take up just because you are not a manager or a senior manager. Promotion is not a nice to have, it's a necessity.

Me and my wife moved to US in the last few years and recently had a baby. Both of us work in relatively stressful jobs. I am having conflicts with her on how to raise kids - my wife and mil don’t see daycare or nanny as viable options, and want to rely on grandparents from both sides to help with the same. They haven’t seen too many cases of children going to daycare in India in their family. Who else has faced this issue, and any thoughts on resolving the same? This is causing a strain b/w us.
