Am I wrong in thinking it’s inappropriate to talk negatively about members of a specific gender or race at work? I’ve been hearing more of it recently.

Ah, yes... The plight of the old white man is one far too often forgotten. *looks into the distance longingly*

Should only talk negative about the client

All those people criticizing old white men... for being, well, old, white, or male...

In the last few weeks I’ve heard “boring white guy”, “another straight white male”, and “men are pigs” by several consultants in my group directed at people behind their back, and often paired with a scoff.

Don't be passive aggressive. It's objectively inappropriate. Say something directly to the people saying it next time you hear it. They either don't know you can hear it or don't care. That needs to change.

like

Really? Where do you work? I've literally never heard what your are describing anywhere I've worked, including client sites. Are we talking things like "oh, they're female, they can't do the job"?? Or just mentioning race, for example "You know, George, the black guy in the cube farm on the 6th floor"

I have - I think Trump has, in a way, provided a permission structure for those who maybe used to have those sexist/racist comments as “inside thoughts” to say those kind of things. I have worked with multiple men who have complained about “women” lead teams being too soft due to birthday celebrations and other stupid things like that. I think 2-3 years ago they might have thought that but now they feel more comfortable saying it.

OP- it’s not okay. As consultants we have standards and a brand to uphold. If you heard it, that means the client might hear it. Regardless of what ppl say or do on their own time, at the office you have to keep it together. I’ve seen this many times and often enough leadership does nothing so it becomes worse. It starts with words and results in poor shit talking team culture. If you have the power, try to fix it. Perhaps a few stern speeches in front of the whole team about “unprofessional behavior, comments and conversations"

I wish my leadership had done something. Instead I suffered in silence and had to deal with those ppl putting me in an awkward spot publicly

Why does everyone preach DEI but fail to recognize that people also grow up in different backgrounds and socioeconomic classes? Increasing diversity in these elite firms also means that you will be at team dinners with people who didn’t grow up with well off parents and experiences living in the finer things in life or enjoying the same things outside of work - but not all teams are cognizant of that in their social conversations and can unintentionally make those ppl feel different. End rant.

I am currently unemployed but I am very curious about everyone’s company signature having she/her or he/him or they displayed. Are companies forcing people to write the pronouns you need to choose? I honestly never understood why somebody that wasn’t in the LGBTQ community would specify, and I know people are doing it to show support but if I started working again I don’t think I would want to put that in my signature. It seems political. What are your thoughts?
