Am interviewing with 2 cos right now. #1 is pretty much a sure thing. #2 looks more interesting but isn’t a sure thing. #1 will likely make offer first. How do I play this?

Transparency always works. Don’t be afraid to tell them you’re deep in discussions with another company at the same time. You’ll need a bit of time to make the decision. If company a has “chosen” you, they want you. They may sweeten the pot but at least they’ll be patient. Then tell company 2, hey I’m really interested in joining your group. Just in disclosure you have an offer elsewhere so ideally if there’s anything that can be done to expedite the assessment process, you’d appreciate it as you are very intrigued by what they have to offer. The truth shall set you free

Don't jump to soon. I'd wait to get the offer for#2, it sounds like you would settle for #1, but don't settle. If you have a current job, don't leave for a sure thing, leave for a "hell yeah"! Heard a recent quote, if it isn't a hell yeah, than it's a no. :-)

Looks like you have a bargaining chip more than anything.

like

They won’t know you’re “settling” just that you’ve selected them. They won’t need to know that you never got the second offer. They’ll feel even better that they beat out company 2

I just went through the same thing. What EVP1 says above is spot on. Good luck.

Thanks. I know there are worse problems to have. Both companies know that there’s another suitor. #1 would definitely not feel like settling, and of course there are upsides and downsides to both.

I'd take the sure thing simply because I've been in a similar situation and ended up losing out on both jobs

@copywriter1 that’s what I’m concerned about. If I hold out for #2 and it doesn’t pan out, does #1 feel like I settled for them? I also don’t want to burn bridges at either, given how small the industry effectively is

Best thing you could do I think is after you get offer 1 you say that you are wrapping up a project that you really like and you'd hate to leave it unfinished. How soon do you really need me to start? I'd like to do some real schedule soul searching to see how far I'd need to stick with this project before I feel like I can pass it off in good conscious. That said, I'd like to accept, but I'll need a little time to figure out a start date. Does that work for you? What is the ideal timeframe for me to start and what is the absolutely-need-you-here-by-then date? That should buy you a week or two. Then you can take the job if #2 doesn't work out

Have my closing interview with Accenture next week. So far the Director and MD I have met with have both liked me and the recruiter has said that they have both given me a thumbs up and that the upcoming closing interview with the MD is just a conversation. From my research I’ve also read that it’s just a sanity check to make sure I’m not a nutcase. Of course anything can happen, but I’m expecting an offer. (Cont)
