1. How did you find your way to PE Ops?
a. Did you proactively reach out to members of your company? Were you approached by headhunters?
2. If you were to learn or do more work in select areas to better prepare for your current role, what would they be?

Thank you, OP!

How is the work structured for you - do you do project type work across multiple portcos or do you focus on 1-2 key ones? What about the same for your team?

Do you see people joining from consulting from manager / principal level, and if so for what levels and what specific skill sets are funds looking for?

Thank you, OP! It’s very insightful
Can you please elaborate on the exemplary types of projects you do? And how are ops teams and portco teams organized around these? How often, if at all, you bring in consultants to support?

Thanks for doing this? What’s your background? Comp & YOE?

It has less to do with years of experience than it does quality of experience. A 35 year old who ran grew and ran a public company may come in as a principal or partner and a 45 year old who was successful but to a lesser degree may come in at VP or principal. They hire the person, not the years. I’d say VP and Partner are more common entry points that principle.

Do you get carry and how is it structured? How long does it take to get the first payout?

My base is mid $200’s - bonus + carry will contribute about the same averaged over the next 5 years.

From a consulting prospective, what types of skills, projects, types of work etc. would make consultants viable candidates for PE ops roles.

Absolutely ^

How much do associate hires (2/3 years of consulting experience after undergrad) make in PE ops? Base vs bonus breakdown? When does carry kick in?

Thank you for the answer and for doing this AMA. Super helpful!

What are the most common initiatives your firm takes to improve PortCos?

Anything and everything. We can be strategists, interim CxO, board members, and more. All depends on the needs of the portcos

What did you do prior to PE Ops?

Worked within marketing, business operations, and revenue growth within growth stage companies in leadership positions.

Are you in partner track within PE ops at your firm? Is there a 2 tier perception (or structure) across Ops vs Deal team?

Partner is likely 5-7 years away still, but definitely the goal. While the focus is still in the deals and the deal team, ops is becoming a more important lever in the industry.

How’s your WLB?

Changes everyday. Some days I’m laptop down by 5pm. Other days you grind into the night. In general I have a better WLB than I expected and it’s better than folks on the deal team. I’d say I work 45-55 hours a week on average.

Do you see lots of people from FDD come into PE Ops? I feel like i’ve seen it a few times (for pre-acquisition diligence and integration), but wanted to get your take/experience.

3-4 years in consulting with no MBA. 2 years with a top MBA.

Thanks for doing this OP! Currently a consultant w/ 2.5 yoe. Is the move to PE ops really only viable if I get reached out from headhunters, or can I start reaching out to them first proactively?

Which Headhunters do you recommend for US?

What size fund are you at? MF, UMM or MM?

What type of investing style? Traditional buyout vs growth vs distressed?

Within PE Ops, what do exit opportunities look like at your level? Are you contacted frequently by recruiters from other firms?

If you don’t mind me asking, within ‘Ops’ (broad term) what specific team are you on? Strategy? Risk management? IR? IT? From your experience, does each team have different levels of compensation / comp structure?

Are you at the PE Ops conference today?

This one was PEI. Was at ACG thing over the weekend

What was the interview process like?

What does the trajectory look like? Probably need to take a role at a portco? Or is there upward mobility?

The more junior you are, the more likely you need a role at PortCo
