Amazon seems to be hiring for a lot of accounting positions in the DMV area for their HQ2. Anyone have any opinions on the exit-ops, W/L balance, comparisons to B4/busy seasons, compensations etc.? Audit M1 here.

FAANG will always have good exit opps, but I've heard many times that Amazon WLB is poor. Also, equity vesting is backloaded meaning you need to stay four years to get paid

like

Yeah they vest like 5% after 1 year, another 15% after 2 years and then 40/40 after 3 and 4 years

I’ve joined Amazon from big four for about 10 months now. Felt like okay wlb. There are definitely days that I worked past 5, but it’s not every day consistently like busy season. It’s either during close, or sometimes when there’s an internal project ddl. It felt like a good balance to me. I don’t really want just barely 40h weeks, afraid it’ll bore me. Amazon provided some exposure to different things (automation, new accounting treatment evaluation, process improvement etc) that adds to my skill set and furthers my exit options. I do work a bit more for those, but it s worth it for me personally. Culture is a bit bureaucratic, but depends more on your specific manager. Pay is not top of the class but def much higher than big four. However as M1 you’ll prob go in there as a senior. Promotion from senior to manager is extremely hard at Amazon.

How’s the comp and upward mobility/progression like? I understand it’s probably very competitive. Possible to come in as a manager and move up in a few years?

They are pushing all new openings in the DMV area. I can't comment on accounting/finance org, but SWE at Amazon has poor WLB across the board. Mandatory PIPs also, which is probably something that would be new if you are coming from B4. The nature of the mandatory PIP culture means people will work very hard and it is very competitive. Since most of your comp is tied up in Y3-4, you will feel compelled to stick around.

Their recruiter reached out, so I was also looking for the same info. According to Glassdoor, WLB is very poor there. But I would love to hear about this from someone with Big 4 experience as well.

Does anyone have experience in transitioning from tax (specifically transaction tax) to an advisory group? Recruiter suggests it’s a mix of FP&A, Deal Advisory and some technical accounting. I definitely am interested in pursuing the role as pivoting out of tax is something I’ve wanted to do, but concerned the learning curve might be overwhelming without an audit background. Serious q: I'm choosing between a two BI/Ops type roles, one in a FAANG in Dublin, one in a less-known corporate in London (where I'm currently based). FAANG pays 70% more and is a more interesting / more senior role, but I'd prefer staying in London where all my friends are / where it's warmer and sunnier. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna take the FAANG role, but has anyone else struggled with this type of career vs. personal life trade-off, and how did you reason about it?

I got a verbal offer from one of big 4 and the 💰 is decent. Here is my hesitation : I want to go truly because I want to grow to be a leader. I am a Sr. DS, specialize in financial risk analytics. I want to join Big4 ( as SA -DS) so I can learn what's new in the industry and see if I can contribute to white papers. Am I too naive? 🤔 I just read so many negative comments about Big4 and really got me thinking....

Suffering from crippling work related anxiety lately. Have always found this job stressful at times but with wfh the anxiety is constant and paralyzing and unbearable. I have regular panic attacks, question everything I do, feel like I’m never doing a good enough job and am really down on myself. Part of this I’m sure is that I live by myself and am alone with my thoughts all day, part is that I’m new to the manager role. Any coping strategies??

Expecting to get an offer from another firm in a week or so and planning to be gone by end of Feb after wrapping up a big engagement. Kinda want to make a point that i am doing that out of the courtesy for my teams so i don’t leave them hanging but at the same time I’m going to another big 4 (but will be doing different type of work) and they’ll probably tell me to pack up sooner rather than later.

Hey guys, I’ve recently started interviewing for a position outside my firm. I was wondering who makes the decision to hire? Does anyone else absolutely hate talking to recruiters to turn down roles? I had two offers come in, had to turn one down. Spent 30 minutes with recruiter saying no thank you, then he put 30 minutes on my calendar with the hiring manager. Then a couple of people that I interviewed with texted and emailed me to see if I could talk. I’m trying to my gracious and thankful, but saying no just gives me so much anxiety because I’m a true conflict avoider

You ever feel like you're just failing to excel in consulting? Today and yesterday have been really hard to tap into any discipline to push past whatever brain fog/lack of motivation is preventing me from making progress on this project. I don't know if I'm just tapped out or not cut out for this type of intensity, but I'm 1.5 yrs into consulting after working in industry and this seems to happen too often. I just don't feel like I'm as good as my peers and don't know that I can get there.
