It’s a lot of work.. keeping people happy, thinking about their growth, their comp increases, their promo docs, hiring new people, managing conflicts between people, playing office politics.. in addition to still managing the technical stuff. I don’t want that personally..
Agree with all this. Only thing I’d add is the comp increase to manage people vs being an IC at the same level isn’t enough for me to deal with all the stuff Amazon1 is describing. If someone told me “hey you can get 40k more a year to manage people” then yeah sign me up. But 10k more a year? Nah, not enough for me to justify all the headaches and potentially lose out on bonuses because I have bad people under me that wouldn’t be good even with the best manager in the world.
Because not everyone wants to be a people manager. I certainly don't. 🤷♀️
You can go all the way up to VP without actually having to manage people depending on your org.
Thanks. I’m in AWS proserve. I think it caps at L7 for IC.

Totally agree with Amazon1. Managing people is actually the easy part. It’s the constantly thinking and planning for a strategy to grow the company and corner the market AND balance the budget that justifies our pay.
I like that part. That’s why I want to pursue IC to M part
Most SA managers just escaped the technical complexity and thus became managers. There is a pay rise. But in general, SA managers are useless, they don't have any say on anything.
Aside from what others have said it’s largely a ball in your court situation for me. As an IC I do my thing and I’m very good at it. Thus I’ve gotten raises, gotten promoted, etc. As a manager you’re largely judged on how your team does. I’ve seen some people come in and take over a team where they didn’t hire any of the people and most of the team in place was useless. That’s just an uphill battle from the start you’re not going to win. I’ve seen good managers just not get through to people because a lot of people don’t care. You’re not in a position to succeed. As an IC I control my own destiny here.
Thanks A3. That’s a great point. I wasn’t thinking about performance evaluation part of it
