Some context here might be helpful. If said ACD was essentially saying that he/she didn't want to/like working with her because she's on the spectrum, then I agree with you. If ACD was essentially giving someone the heads-up that you have to exercise some patience when working with her, I'm less inclined to think the ACD should be burned alive. Even if that's the csse, there's still far better ways to say it.
You might want to bring it up with the ACD first, before you go running to HR. Most people find themselves saying stupid shit from time to time, and having the effect of their words pointed out to them often does the trick. If you don't get the appropriate reaction, take it to HR.
OP, we need more people like you. Thank you for taking this to heart and planning to take action against it.
I agree that going to HR isn’t the move. Be careful and plan out what to say, then go talk to him. Careful not to embarrass him because people tend to create an enemy of of you, or get super defensive. Just find a low key, but clear way to challenge his statement and show why it was harmful to her, and worrisome for you
But say something.
I am sure ACD will have a smart explanation of what was said and meant by the remark, because basically it’s your word against theirs. Keeping that in mind I would opt to speak to the ACD if you were so offended, HR will probably try to explain to you that it wasn’t meant with malice and you would have ruined your relationship with ACD over something that was easy to solve with direct communication. Lots of people are on the spectrum, you gotta know that so you don’t judge harshly.
I wouldn't bring it up with HR. You might think they are there to support people but in reality they are supporting the leadership. Unfortunate, but true.
Also good ACDs are harder to come by than designers. I'd make a mental note but stay clear for now.
Yes, it’s not chill. You can bring it up with HR so it’s recorded. Doubtful anything will happen.
CD 1 Im not saying the guy should be fired he should just be aware that’s not an excuse for keeping someone off a project? And that he shouldn’t say things like that? All i said was it’s a fucked up thing to say, not fire the guy? What if you had a kid who was on the spectrum and everyone was saying they didn’t want to work with them because they thought they had autism? It’s messed up. There’s reasoning you can have that isn’t point blank offensive and excluding people....
^Agreed, OP. He probably should've just kept his trap shut, let her work on the project, and brought in an additional AD to make sure he had the bases covered.
And this is all predicated on her actually being on the spectrum, and not just difficult to work with...which is an entirely different conversation. But also one where references to being on the spectrum are inappropriate.
Just talk with him about it. Tell him you thought it was inappropriate and why. Most people just need to be reminded of how their words affect others.
Thank you SAD1, I’ll be sure to do that. I appreciate everyone warning me of repercussions, and thank everyone for the advice (and the ones who didn’t roll their eyes at me.) She also isn’t difficult to work with in my opinion, they just butt heads because she likes to talk through briefs to be sure she has a clear sense of what’s needed and he‘s more of the figure it out yourself kind of guy. He hates people asking questions and she likes to ask them. One of my best friends has aspbergers and is nothing like her, I doubt she is on the spectrum as he insinuates she is.
Good luck to you OP, it’s a difficult position to be in. I wish you the best!
You will get let go. HR will have a talk with the ACD and they will realize you tried to sabotage their career over a trifling remark. You will be blackballed but at least you won’t have to work with such awful ableists anymore 🙄
The ACD literally said point blank she’s hard to work with because she’s on the spectrum, not to warn others to show patience. They were trying to keep her from working on a project with them after someone recommended her.
