An employee came to me in confidence to raise concern about a colleague of hers who speaks often about guns and how many he owns, etc. Based on what she's described, I don't believe this person has been threatened in any way, but it's clear that the situation is making her feel very uncomfortable - especially given recent events. What, if anything, can I or should I do to help? The company is on the smaller side, so there's really no option to move either employee to a different team.

If you don't have a security team, then raise it as a concern through local police. They will be able to do some discreet checks for assurance purposes of which you can pass to your team.

In the interim - engage in the conversation with the gun enthusiast, hitting on the fact that not all people find guns 'cool' and wish to discuss them in a office environment. No offence, not discrimination just a bit more awareness needs to be shown.

like

We have it listed in our safety policy that discussion is prohibited. You may consider adding to, or drafting if you don't already have, a safety policy. We are in the Bible Belt and hunting is common, but discussion of the weapons is not allowed at work...
I would also have a discussion with the employee, because even if they aren't threatening, it's a subject to be left at home...

Hi. People Manager here. I've been one for 12 years now and I encourage my team to not be "yes" people. At this time, it feels like my manager wants me and my team to be yes people for her. How do I deal with this? I've never been a yes person and I don't preach this to my reports. I don't know what to do. Help?

Is it fair game to report someone’s particularly polarizing IG posts to HR? Was friendly with this person but now I wouldn’t ever want to work with them after some of the things they’ve posted.

I have been working in HR for 1 year now, specifically in recruiting. I am currently an in-house recruiter for a company. There is a large turnover for the position I hire for, the candidates are low quality as the position I hire for does not call for many specific skills or hard-to-obtain skills.
What sort of requirements typically need to be met to move into a different part of HR? I will likely have to find another company as the only positions above me in my company are taken by people who are very unlikely to leave in the coming 4-5 years.

Holiday Pay: We have 8 paid holidays, total of 64 hours, where everyone receives 8 hours of holiday pay regardless of what their schedule is. For example, someone working 10 or 12 hours shifts will receive 8 hours of holiday pay. To make up for the hours that they don't receive, they use PTO. What does your company do? Do you pay based off someone's schedule or is it the same across the board for everyone regardless of what they work?

I had my PHR back in early 2000, then made a career change to a paramedic (I know, right). I called SHRM and they said I'm eligible to test again even though I only currently have 1.5 yrs of HR.

I purchased the online study guide and it seems that HR has gone in a completely different direction - more operations related than employee relations etc.

Did anyone find this online training to be helpful? I test in July, so any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks - lauren
