I suspect the Anomaly layoffs are not in fact a direct result of coronavirus. I hate to say it, but I think they took advantage of the opportunity to use this as an excuse. They’ve been struggling since before the pandemic and given client payment terms, etc it’s hard to believe that so many layoffs and pay cuts were caused by this relatively recent development.
Don’t get me wrong, I believe there will be repercussions for talent as this plays out. Specifically for production, agencies that don’t have a diversified client base, etc. My agency also has travel clients (cruise line, numerous hotels, booking site, airline). So while their spending has been impacted and forecasts must be adjusted, to have it be the sole driver of immediate layoffs and pay cuts is a stretch. And they’re still keeping us busy helping address the crisis in other ways. The situation sucks regardless. I hope those impacted are able to land elsewhere quickly.
A lot of industries are being impacted. No amount of advertising can reduce the panic and paranoia. Not to mention you sadly have people, like the photo below, shaming companies for trying to hire.
I hope those impacted bounce back soon.
The impact of this thing is widespread for sure. Really hoping for the light at the end of the tunnel soon.
