Having worked EMS in a prior life I had a front row seat to the horrendous mental health problem in the US. The mentally I’ll used to be housed in institutions when consistent care was required. These were all shut down due to a mix of revolt as some of the conditions in these institutions and an idea of equality for those houses there. Unfortunately this led to people who are unable to care for themselves being released into the general public with no real infrastructure for support. Now many of these people act in a way that draws the attention of police and EMS, they are treated in the Emergency Department, and then released. Upon release they generally continue treatment for a short period but having no where to go and no one to help them they inevitably stop taking their medications and receive no long term treatment. This cycle repeats itself until they wind up incarcerated or killed by police. It is an incredibly sad thing to witness first hand. It also creates an immense burden on police and EMS having to deal with highly unstable individuals.
The biggest tragedy that occurred in the US was Reagan + others dismantling the Mental Institutions throughout the united states. The science and practices were terrible, but rather than fix them, they "threw the baby out with the bathwater".
It wasn't just him, I agree. Mental Health today is seen as a tip toeing concept and whether you like it or not, some individuals need to be institutionalized against their will and the suspect here was no exception.
That's absolutely heartbreaking. I lived in New York for several years, and can attest to how the subways can be scary at times, especially if you're alone late at night. Prayers to her family <3.
Gosh this is heartbreaking. Condolences to the family.
