I keep a spreadsheet of what I’m supposed to protest or be outraged about. I had to add columns for start date, last updated date, and end date. There is also a tracker that uses NLP to pull in the orange man’s history of tweets on the topic. I had to convert it to an Access database for my last media and entertainment client.

Please do. Too hard to get a nice restaurant reservation these days or snag a new construction house at a decent price. Plus the constant whining is slightly annoying..
OP - where is your barber? New to the city and badly need a haircut

Do I dare say that teachers shouldn’t get a paycheck if they refuse to teach the students? At most they should receive 30% of their normal pay considering studies show online learning for young students is only 30% as effective as in-person teaching 🤷🏼♂️
Thats the nature of the world we live in. If you can afford to pay someone for in person teaching, do so. If you can't then you have to make due with online learning. It is a risky world, anyone who has to put themselves at risk should be compensated accordingly.
I find it funny how we’ve allowed our nurses, grocery store workers, retail workers, etc. to be exposed to risk, but our teachers is where we draw the line. Kind of asinine if you ask me.
WOW...Did I ever say the rest of the society would go out into the world and teachers didn’t need to? I was only explaining why essential workers are going out to the world. I am really surprised I had to spell it out in such details for someone in this bowl to understand this one simple point. I am tired so I don’t want to explain the impacts to students, parents and communities etc. In communities of high transmission rate, it is a trade off of death and education quality. I would never pick death over education quality but go ahead and pick it the other way around. I am SO glad that the decision makers in Chicago have some critical thinking skills so schools are closed for the fall. ✌️
Isn’t protesting like this just as dangerous as teaching in a classroom? I don’t get it.

If you are talking about the protest yesterday most of the people were in a car caravan
OP Please leave, you constantly complain in this bowl about how scary chicago is, how awfully it is, and how much you don’t like it. so stop complaining and GTFO!!

Once again you haven't provided a solution - you said "let's force teachers into this life-threatening experiment and see how many die". We've already killed off a mid-size Texas town in this country with this kind of attitude. When are we going to say enough?? Remote learning might not be the best, but it's better than killing people off until we can get infection rates under control as a country.
And you can deflect all day long, but if you had children you'd know the endless cycle of getting sick during the cold and flu season..
P.S. This picture from the Atlanta reopenings is a very good reminder on how schools and kids are different from a grocery store.
Umm there are so many reasons to leave the city and this is the one for you? This is covid related and likely will be throughout many districts around the country as we get into the school year and full virtual learning isn't the path, I have many teacher friends who have a lot of concerns about returning back to the classroom and some unions have deemed it not a safe work environment as claimed by some Texas and Florida friends. So not sure if you're really escaping anything.
There aren't a tons of alternative options for some professions, while we can do teladoc and instacart this doesn't support 3 million people in Chicago alone, there are some jobs that do need physical presence as the alternatives don't fully support the need while virtual learning does support the need. There are just as many parents wanting their kids in school as there are looking for alternative options so this isn't a "teacher wins and parents dont want this" its literally a lose situation no matter which way it goes. While your anecdotes of your friends/family and mostly mine as well are that working/being in the world are "safe", hundreds of thousands have died so why not use precautions if we can? To my original point Chicago has its problems, like all other major cities, however I do not think this issue is specific to Chicago, you'll find this across the country, it the world we are living in at the moment.

I’m not going yet and you will see more of me, as I’m not in a situation where it’s easy to move
Ok OP, quick question - do you have kids and if so do they attend public school in the city?
Enthusiast
What are they protesting now? I cannot keep up.
Rising Star
They either don’t want to teach at all or they want to teach all remote. Anyway looks like the city caved to the CTU and will shut down schools indefinitely with a bare minimum of some form of remote learning (we hope)....big shocker.
Chicago is not perfect, I dont even like the city, but it has opportunitu, hence I am here. If you want to move, dont make a big deal put of ot, pack your bags and go.
Also the teachers are within the right to protest its a free country.

PM 1, rights come with responsibilities, and vice versa. Yes, teachers have the right to protest, but they also have a responsibility to educate. Online learning is not education, it's a useful tool in many situations, yes, but it is not sustainable long-term for K-12 students.

So much for all the people complaining about my posts. There are 43 comments and growing in this thread. If the topic were irrelevant it would have been ignored, so I think I’ve stimulated some necessary conversations. Point being - and let me spell it out, because I haven’t made it manifest - many of us do want to stay, but people like Lightfoot need to start listening to their predecessors who focused on making Chicago an attractive place to work and live. They stemmed a population decline and made Chicago a hub of the Midwest by attracting people and businesses . It’s always been the big city but has shifted from a very large parochial city with a large finance and manufacturing presence into a talent destination attracting talent in technology and a diversified group of industries moving from the suburbs and through the Midwest to an international alpha city.
I thought you started this so we could all rage at each other and score some karma points.

Slalom not sure you have read my follow-up post but unfortunately I’m not the only one thinking this way, and that puts remainers, like you, at a disadvantage to keep businesses solvent and the tax coffers full. As I said before I love this city and past elected officials worked hard to make this an international destination and a business hub. Recent trends have reversed that progress. Again, there are a lot of people silently leaving. Now on to you - what keeps you around?
Make a good case for school vouchers.
That's not just about teachers, but the parents of children, and increased community spread in general.
You understand having in person classes would lead to a higher case count and another shut down, right?
