When something is of value, such as our children, there should be no limit to what we adults can do to protect them and help them grow. I am beyond sad about this, I’m angry.
The majority of this country wants meaningful gun legislation. If that can’t happen, then we adults collectively value guns more than we value our children. It really is that simple.
No! I’m not proficient in guns and don’t have all the answers. I just know things have to change.
There are meaningful gun laws. They are not used.
Ok, show me the stats on how many mass shootings have been stopped by an AR vs how many have been committed. That sounds like a bullshit claim.
People kill with knives, bats, hammers, pool cues. Do we out law everything that can potentially be a weapon.
Interesting enough...

But instead of having more police, the popular opinion now a days is to defund them and then on top of that to take guns out of the good people’s hands. Because criminals will always get a gun. You saw what happened to Brazil. Gun laws got less strict and crime plummeted. That is because there was more good people with guns.
We need metal detectors and police in entrance and exit of the areas in schools..
And be sure all are locked up doors and windows.
Right? - reply to Attends Missouri High School teacher 2?
How about security guards at schools? - We protect our money at banks and the Capitol has security - let’s arm the school with security . Not a soft target but a hardened target that will dissuade shooters.
All the monies the school got during covid and many don’t even have AC or heating . The priority to fund education is primarily at the state level. The priorities are heavy on bureaucracy and light on the basics. In California our call has been to relieve all of our security guards and usher in restorative practices. I’m sure it CAN lead to decreased violence but it has increased classroom disruption.
I agree that schools should be safe. I find it ironic that the left sees having armed security at schools somehow solidifies the school to prison pipeline by having it look like a minimum security prison. There are things the right and left can agree on here - bring sanitariums back that doesn’t look like a dystopian horror flick and arm/retrofit schools to be safe
I was thinking our national teachers' unions should stage a walkout. How would we get that going? Thoughts and prayers have had their day, and have been shown to be ineffective.
I agree, Cathy!
At least when you walk out it makes it easier to determine who to fire. Check your state Ed code before letting your pathos rule. “The First Amendment does not protect a teacher from all restrictions on speech made within the teacher’s professional capacity as a teacher”
So how are kids gonna be protected then?
Ban assault rifles and put regulations in place. I don’t wanna hear that BS argument “people will get guns anyway”. Sure, but it sure as hell will be harder than it is now. At least we won’t be able to say we gave them the damn gun legally. In Texas, if your 18+ and have a drivers license you can waltz into a gun store (about as common as Walmart) and buy any gun without even knowing how to turn on the safety. An 18yo could legally buy a gun in the morning and shoot up a school before noon
And yet- there are 400 million guns with responsible gun owners. Enforce laws that are on the books . However when you have DAs that don’t prosecute and the rule of law is turned on it’s head “impact over intent” you will get instability and that with a person battling demons is where your attention should go.
We can't trun school into a prison...but at this time, we do need acknowledgement from policy makers. We're the ONLY country that sees this kind of gun violence now - look at what places like the UK and Australia have done for gun control
Rising Star
HSST and Michigan,
I am not disputing gun violence needs a solution. Those are not what is being discussed here. If you want to talk about gun reform, I support you. I am for stricter gun laws and overhauling a broken system, but that really is not my point.
I’m talking about in schools. Our schools are not killing fields. The chances of a student getting shot at a school is less than a fraction of a percent.
Many perpetuate this concept that schools are killing fields and every school will inevitably be gunned down. Teachers tell kids it’s only a matter of time until it’s our school. That’s not true. They are not at significant risk of being gunned down when they enter a school building.
I fully support gun reform (though it’s not as simple as no guns, in my opinion) but we need to stop letting the narrative of school shootings overwhelm student thought. They are extremely rare. You can recognize a need for change without being hyperbolic and living in fear.
The number who die in mass shootings each year is dwarfed by fentanyl deaths. Where is the outrage? More die each weekend in Chicago each weekend. Where is the outrage? In Chicago each weekend the shooters kill one or two each so it’s not called a mass shooting.
Mich hs- wasn’t in response to you.
I don't understand it at all. I have been trying to wrap my head around it and I just can't. Who kills children? It just doesn't make any sense.
Someone who can access 7 guns with ease
I support citizens owning guns for protection…. I think we should have armed guards at the schools, just like our banks
A guard at a school does not make it a prison. Obviously some do not know anything about prisons.
Corporate buildings and banks have more protection that schools. No one should be able to just walk into a school especially with a gun
Then don't carry one. No one is forcing you. Let those that DO, carry.
Deeply inspired by the number of comments on this post after less than 24 hours. We're in this together!
Cathy, I agree with you. There is a lot of power in a walk-out. Look at LA school district in Cali
But to have one, the messaging is usually clear. Here there are many opinions on how to help. Its not helpful to walk out until people know what u want
