I love that we're alive at a time when both seem to be setting higher highs (and in the case of AAA some lower lows).
The games that have taken up my time the past year are a mix of both: Hades, Rocket League, Factorio, The Last of Us, all of DeckNine's games, Ghost of Tsushima, Slay the Spire, Stardew Valley, Dad of War.
The state of gaming (and media in general) has me extremely hype to retire in 5-10 years. When people say, "but what will you do with all that time?" I laugh in their boring faces. Within 2-3 consoles and a PC I have more games to play (and replay) than I have time left on this earth. We live in a golden age.

Yeah when people are like, oh I will just find a bunch of boards to serve on or start a business, I just laugh. I’ll socialize and exercise with golf and tennis and cooking and going out for lunch or whatnot, but spend plenty of time gaming. Add improvements in VR and there will be no shortage of things to do.
i agree. the past year i've been really digging indie stuff like slay the spire, inscryption, vampire survivors, phasmophobia, wingspan to name a few. been meaning to try ape out, subnautica, and disco elysium. so many AAA games haven't piqued my interest in the last couple years. hell i've been revisiting older games like TF2 too lmao
Disco Elysium and Subnautica -> amazing
I think indie games have more flexibility to take risks and be innovative and truly break the mold. AAA are such big productions that they can't take many risks or deviate from a tried and true formula. I don't enjoy them as much anymore, but many people do, and that's fine. I'm definitely getting a lot more mileage from my indie collection, although, I did enjoy the last 2 Doom games, and I'm looking forward to Starfield
