The short answer is you’ll need a copywriting portfolio. I’d recommend looking at the portfolio school websites to see what their student books look like. VCU Brand Center, Miami Ad School, etc. Not that you need to go, but it gives you a sense of what CDs are looking for in a junior writer.
Thanks for this!
Hi there, fellow designer. After completing my bachelor's in design, I worked as a fashion designer for a bit.
Did my MA in Advertising & Design and am currently a Copywriter at an agency. I had my previous fashion work in my portfolio too, it showcased that I could think creatively and build concepts. It also showed that I am a visually apt person and so I can think as well as create a wholesome ad (copy + art) all by myself.
6 months in, they made me a dedicated resource for a fashion brand and it has been the best time I've had working. I wouldn't look back.
So yeah, do work on good campaign ideas. Pick up D&AD briefs and see what others have been up to. Try a few yourself. Show it around. Reach out to fellow fishes here for feedback.
But don't forget to bring in your design background in your portfolio. They'll love this extra angle. Good luck and feel free to DM me :)
Hey thanks so much for this perspective! I’ve added my design stuff to my portfolio and been able to speak to it with a recruiter! Glad to hear it helped you.
I did this. Start getting a book together of killer ideas. And read read read and write shitloads. Blogs or whatevs.
Thank you! You did design to copy? That’s awesome. Where did you find briefs to do self initiated work?
