If you’re WFH, I think you have more leeway in not telling anyone. Schedule a private “meeting” everyday and take a short nap! But I also think it’s completely okay to tell your direct manager, if you feel comfortable doing so, just in case you need a little grace for a few weeks. I have found most people to be extremely happy and supportive, so I was not worried to tell my colleagues. But I did wait to tell everyone (excluding my manager) until after 12 weeks because of miscarriage risk, but that is entirely personal preference! Congratulations, OP!!

Congratulations OP! Here’s my take on this - we need all the help we can get in the first trimester, and if that means giving up on certain traditions so be it. First trimester is tough and you want your co workers to understand that and support you. I told my team and clients very early and they were so happy for me. When I went to the doctor for my ultrasounds, they wanted to see the pics afterwards. It was joyful and took the stress off my chest.

I didnt tell anyone just scheduled the appointments during times that were still open in my calendar and then I would block that time and travel time before and after.

+1 to remembering to block off travel time in your calendar.

Hi, I didn't want to tell everyone during my first trimester but I told the MP in my project and my coach, and I was clear that I wasn't telling anyone else for now. You have very few appointments during the first trimester, however, it can be hell easily with nausea, mood swings, etc. So, it's good to tell your boss in case you need to step down, rest, and then come back to finish. The moment you tell everyone they will support you and they won't think that you are leaving the work to them, don't worry.

like

I told them I had some medical issues and potentially a lot of doctors appts upcoming. I didn't tell my project lead and performance manager until 12 weeks.

like

Congrats! I was worried about this too but the truth is there aren’t usually many appointments in the first and second trimester - just a couple between 6 and 20 weeks for scans/labs. You could ask your doctor what the appointment schedule is and then decide based on that whether you need/want to tell your team. I told a few key folks at 11/12 weeks but it was also the beginning of the pandemic and felt it was important they knew.

like

I told my manager at 10 weeks and that's only because I'm high risk and had A LOT of appointments scheduled within a one month span. I didn't want him thinking I was stepping out and interviewing at other companies.

like

Both times I told my direct colleagues who would need to cover for me when I was out, would schedule ooo with no context (because you don’t. Have. To!) and then I told at 15 weeks both times once I felt comfortable enough to share news

My manager told our team she’s going on maternity leave 2 weeks before she left when she needed to turn over her responsibilities...just saying

like

By law, you don’t have to tell them until 30 days (in most states) some states might be two weeks.

Just a word of caution, think about if something goes wrong the amount of people that you will have to let in on the news... it’s good to have a support system of family/friends but personally I would have crumbled if I also had to tell work people about my miscarriage. Instead just let them know you have doctors appointments. Typically they won’t ask and if someone is being nosey, I tell them dentist or eye doctor.

First time Dad and my 15 month old keeps running up the stairs at my in-laws place and they keep encouraging it. Stairs are almost 10 inches high with nothing underneath and I’m worried that he might slip and fall in between the stairs. My FIL is a bit of a know-it-all and keeps insisting it’s safe and I don’t agree. What do I do? Don’t want to fight the entire house full of people about this and kid enjoys it too much and cries a lot if I/we prevent him from climbing

Dads with older children: while raising your children, did your children prefer their moms over you? I know some will prefer dads over moms, but I assume majority of children out there will prefer their moms over dads… I have one child and it kinda hurts to see my child always preferring the mom over me. I know I shouldn’t feel this way, but I just do. How did you cope with such issue raising your children?

Our 5 month old started daycare about 5 weeks ago. We’ve already had to keep her home for 2.5 of those 5 weeks due to catching various illnesses (croup, rsv, brinchiolitis, etc). Both my wife and I have been sick most of that time as well (gotten it from the baby). Wife is thinking we get a full time nanny for the next 4 months to help the baby build antibodies. Cost aside, is this feasible / worthwhile to go thru the effort / finding the right fit, only for 4 months?

Also, if they do end up giving you salary between your stated range, can you propose a counter offer of $75,000? Thank you for any responses, I'm somewhat new to salary negotiations and such.
