Additional Posts in Ask A Recruiter - Tech
I had a recruiter reach out to me from Google 3 years ago about a role she thought I would be good for. She really advocated for me to be in the role but the hiring managers didn’t feel like I was qualified.
We had a discussion and she gave me a lot of good feedback on how I could be a stronger candidate and encouraged me to reach out to her directly for future opportunities. Fast forward to now, I’ve gained a lot of experience and skills. Should I reach out even though it’s been 3 years?

I think the best way would be 2 routes:
1. Work as an IT/Technical Recruiter within a staffing agency then leverage those skills to transition internal.
2. Be open to recruiter roles in other industries. Though a company itself might not be in tech, they might also have an Engineering/IT you could potentially help hire for. Try to gain as much experience with hiring for Engineering/IT talent as possible then leverage to a tech company!
Just also keep applying for tech companies too bc you never know!
Also be realistic with compensation. Research what an entry level tech recruiter makes in your area. If you go the agency route which I would also recommend, expect low base and to make most of your money in commission. Whether it’s perm placements or contract it will be invaluable before going to in house.
Don’t be the first your person expecting a total lateral or more money for making a move.

You won’t break into tech without any experience. It’ll take a couple of years before you get the chance. I would echo the above 1st comment. Staffing agencies are a great starting point to gain recruiting experience.
