Hey OP. Having worked in big tech before law school, and spoken at length with our consultants, I can say the best path to becoming a tech consultant is becoming a skilled and rigorous generalist before.
Whatever you specialize in, clients are always going to want their consultants to have the bigger picture. To put it differently, specializing too early hinders the bigger, commercial acumen clients want and so desperately need from you.
Your best bet, I believe, is going into a big, prestigious consulting firm and working on what’s handed to you for a few years. After some time, you’ll be able to position yourself as a “tech expert” internally, which will get you opportunities to impress your tech-specialized supervisors and possibly, your tech clients.
Once you’ve earned their trust, push ahead, and truly specialize. And if you’re ever fed up with your job, you’ll easily and quickly be able to lateral out through the network you will have created beforehand.
Thank you
